Title: How To: DIY W8 Light Mod
Post by: mikemk4gti on 06 December 2009, 16:59
A few people asked for a how to on this so I decided to take a few pics when I did mine for the second time. hopefully the mods can put this into the how to section.

First you need to get some LED's. You can have any colour you like but I went for red 3mm, you could use 5mm but 3 are perfectly big enough.

Don't ask me how to remove the interior light as thats how I broke mine, You can remove the lens part by pulling it from the front and it pops off, then you can see 2 phillips screws - remove these. The next bit is trying to get the bl**dy thing out of the roof lining  its held in by 4 tabs in each corner, with a little patience and a small screw driver it will come out ok.

Right, once the light is out you can choose where to put the LED's, on my second one i put them in the lens and I think it looks 10x better. just drill 2 3mm holes in the lens but make sure that they are clear of the bulbs inside the lamp when fitted.

then drill a hole for the wires to go through

then you can solder the 2 black wires onto the lamp (or if you don't have a soldering Iron you can just connect it to the brown wire that comes into the lamp)

then you need to run a wire from the lamp down to the headlamp switch, remove the drivers door seal at the A pillar then just push the wire through the hole where the lamp fits until it comes out at the top of the A pillar ( can take some fiddling) then run it down the A pillar to the back of the headlight switch. To remove the headlight switch you need to push the switch in and turn to sidelights position then pull. you then need to connect a wire like so:

connect this wire to the red wires from the LED's and test

thats it, all done. put it all back together and admire your handywork

What is the purpose of a W8 light? Is it just to light up the car inside a bit at night?

Think its just a cool looking item lol, i was under the impression that it was to light up the top of the gear knob.

No, but all you'd need to do is fit a switch in the wire from the headlight switch.
