Why do you suspect the earths?
Cos when I turn ignition on to crank the starter I get a tad of smoke coming from -ve terminal, and the clocks and everything else dies. It only comes back on if I slam the door shut. + If I try cranking there is a click from the starter motor, as if it was a relay clicking, but louder.

Bit of a bump, but it's exactly the same question from me... (ABF engine)

I've found the earth strap from top of engine block to the bulkhead (since I'm not completely stupid ), but I'm not sure on the locations of the others as I'm not 100% sure exactly which bits are which under the bonnet...

- Cam cover to inlet manifold bracket - cam cover is on top of the engine block? And inlet manifold bracket... I'm not sure about that one.
- Under battery tray... I had a poke around but couldn't really find anything. There seems to be a flat plate that the battery sits on, should it be underneath there? Needs accessing from under the car?
- Nearside end of cam cover - is that the strap that goes to the bulkhead?
- Front driver's side of block - can't see anything there, but there does appear to be a hole with what looks like an M8 thread in it which is completely empty, just near the oil cap...
- Alt+ starter cones... That's the alternator connections? I chased the cables from the battery to the alternator and cleaned all those terminals last week, is that right?

Here is what I'm working with... Doesn't seem to look all that much like other photos of the ABF engine I've seen, I seem to have bits missing, bits added, etc, haha

Any help appreciated!

1. never heard of that one
2. you have to take battery out, then unbolt the battery tray, earths are under there
3. does sound like the cam cover to coil mounting bolt
4. thats for 8v, on 16v this one is on the rear passenger side of the head, should be 2 wires here on ring terminals brown and brown/white
5. these arnt earths they're lives. alt and starter earth thru the engine block itself, the one you need to check for those is the gearbox earth which is on a stud on the end of the rear engine->gearbox mounting bolt
