Title: Help a noobie?
Post by: billyplane on 01 December 2009, 09:04
Fellow owners this is my 1st post, apologies for no formal introduction but I couldn't find the relevant section, however there's beers all round.

Before I get put over a barrel by VW I thought I'd see if anyone can help. I have a Mk5 GTi, 56 plate and recently when you give it the boot you get a wee (single) judder or what seems like a pause and then full power. Sorry if this is vague but I'm not mechanically minded. It almost seems like your running low on fuel. I only cover less than 10 miles a week and have noticed this slight problem since the cold weather, should I put 2 & 2 together? Could it just be that the cars cold and I don't drive it anywhere? I just don't want to be taken to the cleaners by my local garage!

If I have missed something please shoot me down in flames and I appreciate any help from like minded drivers.

Will
(troubled Mk5 owner somewhere in a field in Norfolk)

mine has done that since new when its cold, its normal, the engine needs to be warmed up before you boot it.
is it ok when its warmed up?

Yes, only noticed once cold, sounds obvious I know but thought I'd check!

Give a good long run once in a while. The car will thank you for it. Also you will get a mess of mayonaise under the oil filler cap if you do short journeys in cold weather.

best not to boot it until you see the oil temps hit the middle of the gauge

as said, you need to open her up once in a while and give the engine a good run

You'll not see the oil temp hit the middle of the gauge as it is the water temp gauge on the dashboard. Oil will take a minute or so extra to the water to get to temp

If the oil isn't to temp it will be slightly thicker and the same oil lubricates the turbo, so it will take a little longer to spool and this maybe the pause you sense.

To exaggerate an example....imagine turning a whisk in treacle and then imagine turning the same whisk in water. In water it will obviously have less rsistance and spin easier. A wierd analogy, but you get the idea.

Hummmm treacle . . . .

You should never drive it hard until it's warmed up, and 10 miles a week! once a month make sure you take it for a nice long drive and enjoy yourself ;)

Until the temp reaches 90, mine is much less responsive - as if its running tied to a bunjy rope, as soon as it hits 90 it flies. Just seems to be yet another characteristic of this weird and wonderful engine :D

Mine too. It's a little sluggish at first, but I suppose our cars' sluggish can be quite rapid, relatively speaking!

I try to wait for an extra five minutes after I see 90c... Won't do any harm  :nerd:
