hello again peeps,
I just got given a rather nice alpine "cde 9850ri" head unit to replace my sh!tty standard head unit. I know how to install it as i've done a couple of head units now, but i am not sure how to get my sh!tty one out as i dont have the prongs that slot down the side of it to get it out.
Is there a technique you can use or a tool that can be found around the house to get the old head unit out without those special prong things?
If it helps my v dub is a 1995 mk3 and the standard head unit is a horrible black cd/radio player.

Another way is to remove the lower dash on passenger side and the glovebox which takes about 5 minutes. You can then see the stereo in the back of the dash and can use a screwdriver to remove the stereo. Better to remove from the rear so you don't damage the front of the dash. Cheers Deano

just for archiving reasons.
a couple of coathangers normally do the trick, or hacksaw blades down the side of the unit if you are looking for thin ones rather than prongs.
