Title: new to the forum (hello!) plus lingering issue with my 1.8T
Post by: GeorgeJoshington on 30 November 2009, 08:57
Hello all,

Been a lurker here for a while, and finally decided to join.

You guys seem like a knowledgable bunch, so perhaps someone can help me with a problem...

I have a 2000 1.8t and for a while now I've been experiencing a metallic spinning sound from (i think) the rear drivers side wheel. I've taken it to various garages and have had various things done to it (brake pads, suspension coils, rear axle bushes), but nothing has gotten rid of this horrible noise. It almost sounds like a slightly far-away pneumatic drill! I'd say it only happens at lower speeds but due to the louder noise when travelling at higher speeds I can't be sure.

I've had it up on the ramp and when the wheel is being spun by itself there's no noise - it only seems to happen when i'm actually driving the car. Doesn't seem to be related to when i'm going round corners particularly, just happens all the time...

It's definitely related to the wheel going round - like something is loose and something's catching on it at points when the wheel spins. Bearing? Wheel alignment? Brake discs? Anyone experienced anything like this before?

Thanks in advance...

Hi
Did the sound reproduce itself when the garages tested it ?

I don't know. I've tried to impress upon them that there's a noise but they seem reluctant to come out for a drive with me to test it and when they drive it 50 yards up the road they seem unable to hear anything. It's very frustrating - there is most definitely a loud horrible noise whenever I drive it.

I am guessing wheel bearing mate

It sounds like a wheel bearing to me. Perhaps it could be a sticky brake caliper..? Don't the brake discs have a metal shield to protect them from mud and crap? Maybe this is slightly distorted / bent... I'm sure I've read here, or somewhere else, of someone having a similar problem and this was the cause of the problem.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Thanks for the replies, guys, it's been really doing my head in and it sounds so horrible that I get the feeling something rather unpleasant is happening down there.

I'll pop it back to the garage this week and refuse to take no for an answer until they can diagnose the issue. I'll suggest wheel bearing and also the brake caliper...

...and it sounds so horrible
Hi
Is there any way you can record the sound and put up a video for us.

Just a question, have you had new rear pads recently? Is there corrosion on the rear disc? you may find that the Rear Pads may be rubbing on some corrosion on he discs (maybe not all the time) causing a metalic sound.

You could considering having the corrosion ground off the disc's (cheaper), or replacing rear pads and discs (more expensive), I would not be suprised if the Rear Wheel bearings are built into the discs anyways! some1 here will know!!!

The wheel bearings are not built into the rear brake discs, most likely sticking brake caliper or as said wheel bearing, jack the vehicle up and spin up both rear wheels and check for any wear/play.

i think it could be rear wheel bearing as i get a noise which relates to the rotation of the wheel.... i put it in neutral whilst driving so i could hear a little bit better to stop the engine/exhaust noise. maybe this could help?

hope u get it sorted soon matey

dave.

from what you are saying i think you are suffering from what i had which took my 3months to diag, at low revs i could hear a wierd spinning sound maybe once or twice a day mainly when pulling off slowly or as i started to reverse from the passenger footwell area, nobody could tell me what is was..only when i run a test with vagcom for the 100th or so time and Camshaft position sensor popped up i cleared it and it come back so i replaced it..and i never had the noise again, now im 100% it was the Camshaft position sensor as when i parked the car 30secs before fitting the Camshaft position sensor replacement it was making the noise and the next time i drove it didnt and never has gain that was 2months ago. its a really wierd noise sounds like its at your feet. i bought mine off ebay 17quid genuine audi part

Thanks for all the replies guys, much appreciated. Unfortunately there's no way I can really record the noise - it doesn't happen when the car's jacked up and i just spin the wheel, only when driving.

As for the camshaft sensor suggestion, It sounds fairly similar but I'm 99% sure the sound is coming from one or both of the rear wheels as opposed to the passenger footwell as was mentioned...

The rear pads have been changed fairly recently but the noise was happening before that. After all of the suggestions I'm guessing it's either the bearing or perhaps a warped/cracked disc which is catching on something as the wheel turns. I'm inclined to think it's disc related - am I right in thinking that you can usually spot a dodgy bearing just by jacking up the car and spinning the wheel/giving it a wiggle? Plus the discs do have a bit of corrosion on them...

I'll take it back to the garage at the weekend and get them to have a good look.

Yes mate. If you have a bearing on the way out there will be some play in the wheel when you spin/wiggle it.

you dont always get play in the wheel when a bearing is shot! i didnt anyway!

Well I've booked it in for a 'free brake check' and I'll get them to test the bearings as well. Hopefully they'll find something! Cheers guys, will report back after it's been in...

Could be something silly like a wheel weight loose/ catching - ive heard of it before!

My money would be on a bearing TBH

aaaaaand (drumroll please)...

It was the discs. Apparently they were totally shagged. Got some lovely new ones on there and the noise that has been plaguing me for months is finally gone from my car.

Now I have a fully-working car. Must be time for that remap...
