Title: GTD - report
Post by: olly1 on 25 November 2009, 12:49

Had my GTD 3 months now 52mpg, (1,423 miles) and it pulls like a train but following
the thread about a breakdown - first night with car on the drive 3:00am alarm went off
twice! Thought someone was trying to steal it!
Took it back to garage and they could not find any fault, clearly water had got where it shouldn't!
Having previously had an Audi TT, there is some lag as it takes off but the mid range grunt I love it.
Had an annoying rattle in the dash board which was sorted, turned out to be loose clutch cable?
Overall well pleased and would recommend it, just need to get it chipped now
Only waited 6 weeks for factory order delivery, (I undertand it is nearly 4 months wait now!!? for one)
Colour choice - Steel Grey, 18 inch wheels not monzas as the stealers would not sell me any????? may go reps route.

Enjoy, Olly  - I faxed over my Gti order form 5 minutes ago but the GTD is a great car, too.

well done mate, hope the bug doesn't keep on going off during the night.

How long did you wait for delivery?

not sure yet and, judging by what is being said on the forum, even if I am given a date, I probably shouldn't rely on it  -  might be later than 1 March...

Do they have the same suspension as the GTI?
52 mpg is very good, I think GTI's get about 32 mpg, over 12,000 miles you would save about £700 on fuel.

Wow 52mpg, good stuff!

I've had my test drive in the GTi last weekend and i've got my GTD drive this Sat. Either way, i'm going from an R32 so i'll be saving dosh on fuel which ever way i go.

Did notice the lack of torque on the GTi, but the GTD has probably similar to the R32.

Would i be right in saying GTD's feel quicker than GTi's on regular roads, due to the torque?

No they are slightly different. But i hear the new builds have the slip diff from the GTi now.

I've read a few times that although the GTD is slower than the Gti, it feels as fast  -  let us know what you think...

It's only GTD owners that say that. It's something similar to only ugly people saying that looks dont matter.

52mpg is very good, I have the same engine in an A3 with DSG and get about 47mpg.
Switching to a manual GTD sometime when the factory planners take their fingers out of their ar5es!

Enjoy the GTD.....

That is good.

Who would you use to chip the car?

My GTD is due into the dealer by the end of this week but I won't put it on the road until January. I can't wait because I ordered it in the middle of July!

Have you done anything else to the car?

mid-July?! enjoy it when it arrives!! I ordered the Gti today  -  might be June before I see it??!

Think the GTi is 7mm lower at the front (and wider track?) but otherwise pretty much the same.

I get more like 41mpg in my GTD (only 800 miles though and getting slightly better each week) and 50mpg on the Motorway.  My Mk5 over the same commute (B roads and lots of hills) was more like 25mpg and the Mk6 GTi I test drove was about the same (probably not run in though).

Getting around 52-53mpg on a tank two months and 4000 miles down the line.

That's great  -  I'm happy that I've ordered the Gti but it's certainly an order that comes from my heart and not my brain. Enjoy in good health and safety.

It's worth another £700 a year not to have a diesel

Seriously though, and I really hate to say this, the GTD is an excellent car. And I prefer the monochrome seat fabric in the GTD to the GTI. Suspension-wise the only differences are the ride height and the spring and damper rates. But like all diesels the GTD feels quicker than it actually is, so definitely needs a remap.

Ive got a GTD supposedly waiting at the dealers for me, just trying to get a collection/delivery date sorted. Been waiting for it since mid July!!! so I am well and truly boucing off the ceiling now waiting for it.

Hope its worth the wait. Previously had MK4 2.0 'GTI', MK4 1.8T GTI and MK5 140 GT TDI. Hope it compares well to these. Would absolutely love a new GTI but would cost me about £40-50 a month more to buy and a tank of gas a month so just couldn't stretch that far!!

What colour did you get? mines candy white.

you could do a heck of a lot worse than the GTD  -  reviews say it's a great car  -  enjoy it.

Someone else on here or on another forum had similar faults with their alarm and it turns out the car had been programmed on the VAG COM alarm setting as a 3 door, when in fact it was a 5 door. Or vice versa but it seemed to cure their problem.

I can't believe how much acceleration I have on the motorway in 4th in my diesel. It flies.

I went for candy white too.

I have a Fiscon kit, 19s and lowering springs waiting for it too!

Still don't know how you GTD owners are getting 52mpg out of the GTD unless its all motorway miles. We have a new CR TDI audi at work with the same engine and its not doing anywere near that average unless on the motorway

I've read a few times that although the GTD is slower than the Gti, it feels as fast  -  let us know what you think...
Its the torque spread and the amount of it. They do feel as quick at part throttle openings in town especially weaving in and out the traffic .

Sounds great, will look awesome on 19s. I'll only have the bogo 17s. Haven't seen one on them yet as all the ones ive seen have the optional 18s

Cheers

I have the GTD on 17s - they look great, much prefer them to the GTD 18s.  Pretty easy to keep clean as well!  Will post some pics when have dry/have time etc...

GTD FTW

I love the torque, when you first set off in 1st and doing say 10mph, then floor it you just hear the engine rpm increase & turbo spool up then suddenly all Hell is unleashed as the turbo becomes fully spooled and WOOSH off you go   There's nothing quite like that of a high powered diesel

Got to agree about the 17's, at the showroom I struggled to see the difference is size between the17's and 18's.
Automatically knew I wanted the bigger wheels and would have specced them  but the 17's just looked better to me. Looking on Autotrader and Ebay virtually all GTD's have the 18's fitted so will at least be alittle rarer.

This video shows them off quite well....all be it against some very ordinary standard GTI wheels in France

Very good.  The more people that buy the diesel, the more cars we can overtake.

Eibach brought out a kit lowering the front 25mm and the rear 20mm.

I am told this kit is specific to the GTD but it didn't say GTD on the box, it only said MK6. They better fit!
