Title: Picking up my GTi this Saturday!!
Post by: Davstylee on 25 November 2009, 08:57
Hey guys

I just wanted to let all you lovely people know that I will be picking up my first ever 3 door 05 MrkV GTi with DSG on Saturday, from a VW main dealer in Loughton (hours drive from my house, thats how much I want a GTi) Will be handing over the plastic money just as long as they have done everything they said they would, according to all the checks I made thanks to the help of you guys via my other post "What to look out for on a Mark V GTI with DSG?”

Can’t wait to get it and start experiencing the fun of owning such a great car.

Here is a list of things that are on the car

•   DSG
•   Cloth seats
•   Winter Pack
•   Luxurary Pack
•   Auto wipers
•   Auto lights
•   Flat tyre sensor
•   Rear parking sensors
•   CD player with 10 speakers

It comes with a VW 1 year warranty but after that I wouldn’t mind playing around with a few MOD’s. So what MOD’s would you say best compliment and improve on an already great car? I was thinking a stage one re-map via AMD in Essex for a start, but apart from that I’m drawing a blank. I don’t want to go to OTT, and I wont be using it on a track or anything, so just a few ideas on MOD’s that give the car that little extra something. All suggestions welcome.

Thanks again!

Nice one mate. All i have done with mine is fit edition 30 alloys (don't like Monza alloys in any size) & a Milltek cat back non resonated exhaust.Mine has a few of the options you have listed so for me mine is fine now.I'm more into looks than loads of extra power & in standard form it's just what i want.

Remap and decent tyres.  Plus brighter lightbulbs (Philips)

I could be wrong, but if you mod, youre void your warranty.

He said he wants to do it after the warranty, so no worries there!

I am tempted with a remap, but to be honest I have no problems with the car in its standard guise

Thanks for all the welcome messages.

Can’t wait to get it, will be a big step up from my 55reg 1.5 Suzuki Swift GLX ha ha!

Yeah I'll wait until the warranty expires until I do anything major to it.

I was thinking of fitting AUX lead fitted so I can plug in my ipod as a quick start. Has anyone done this and is it hard to do? I have a relatively sound knowledge of fitting car stereos as I've fitted a good few to my own cars and my mate’s cars. I just don’t fancy popping out the head unit and making a mess of the dashboard in the process. Now I know people will ask what head unit I've got, but im afraid I don’t know the specific type. From what I understand I think it’s just the regular bog standard one you get.

Hmmm brighter bulbs, sounds easy enough? Any suggestions on what ones to get that will pass an MOT? Part numbers and where to get them from would be a big help too.

Ahh the age old tyre debate. I know quite a few people rate the Goodyear Eagle F1's on this forum. Anyone feel like adding to that? The car has the 17inch alloys, so if someone knows prices and tyre sizes and any other suggestions on what make of tyre to get that would be great.

I was thinking of changing the spark plugs? Thoughts or comments on this?

Tyres - just got Eagle F1s (GSD3s) all round fitted to mine, and they are quite simply awesome on this car. £330 for 4 inc VAT and fitting.

My only "complaint" was that my fuel economy dropped... but the difference will be down to your driving style and what the current tyres are so I probably wouldnt count that in your decision as it may not affect you.

Oh 17" for mine also...

Cool they sound like a good investment.

Where did you get yours from? Did you order them online then have them fitted by a local garage or did your garage stock them already?

I've used the same local garage in Bracknell, Berkshire for 8-9 years, always the cheapest around for me - where you based?

Philips x-treme power H7 bulbs work well.  A cheap and easy mod that brings good results.

If you was to spend a day with your car remapped your opinion would change I guarantee.

Moding is a slippery slope. I was just going to have a remap, but have since changed LOTS of things lol :D

Ah im in Kent in a place called Belvedere (about 15 mins from Bluewater)

I have this pretty decent tyre place called Dartford Tyres. My step dads company uses them on their company cars, and my uncle who is a mechanic knows them and uses them alot too.

Ive been on www.camskill.co.uk and they seam to have a good selections at good prices. Anyone know what tyre size you need for the oridinal 17's that come with the MK5?

Not joking here mate The goodyear eagle F1s are pretty much the best tyre money can buy. Ive had them on every car The are awesome. They have won loads of awards and EVO magazine voted them tyre of the year a couple of years ago.

Go to black circles im sure the last time i looked they were only £75 for the size you are looking for.

Enjoy your new car. I pick mine up 1 week today

Yeah i think i will be gettting a set of them when the bridgestones that are fitted need changing. What ones would you sugest, the GSD3, the Asymmetric or the Asymmetric XL?

Im guessing the tyre size i would need is 225/45/R17? (The car has the standard 17's that come with the GTI)

Good luck with the purchase, I pick mine up tomorrow, cant wait.

I just picked up the car this morning. One word, awesome!

Loving every aspect of the car, it’s a proper joy to drive cant wait to take it for a proper spin.

One thing is niggling me though. There is a proper loud rumble whenever I go over 20mph. I’m guessing it’s the rubbish tyres making the noise but I could be wrong? Any ideas?

Do you have Dunlop Sportmax tyres by chance, if so ditch them soon as

Yes that will be the Sportmaxx :D

Had that on mine too... ditch those tyres as soon as humanly possible

I dont think they are, im pretty sure the rears are Bridgestone, and the fronts are Yokahoma me thinks??

I was gonna ditch them soon for the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics, good choice? Do I need the XL tyres on the 17's?
