some of the retaining clips on my exhaust shield have broken or rotted away . can i buy them from vw ? ifso does someone have the part number . if can i remove it without it causing any harm to the car
-
Rip them off.
I'm guessing you mean the heatshield on the cat? I removed mine from the mk3 for the same reason.

Mine fell off, and have no probs. Just dont park on any long grass

I suspect its the big heatshileds up against the body at the back? Yes?
If so then yes you can get those circular things, but you could also with the aid of a tap & die set fit washers and nuts!

7pence each but dont bother they dont fit right, new ones are slightly different, just done mine, and a week later its rattling again

Oh and if I am right with the one you're on about then no you cant remove it as it protects the plastic fuel tank!

Balls does it, I removed all of them from my 1.4 and never had any problems.

I believe that len is right in what its "meant to do" but i doubt its actually needed unless you are creating some serious heat....

Well if a very warm rear box should find itself up against a plastic tank eventually it will melt it! BOOM!
personally I would rather not take the risk.

What I really hate is people that ask a question then dont even come back on!
