Just a heads up for those that are thinking of buying a car in the next year (not only expensive GTI or R models) that different, independent tax consultants are strongly suggesting that the standard rate of VAT will increase even further, possibly in Summer 2010.
Standard rate VAT now 15%
Standard rate VAT 1 January 2010 17.5%
Standard rate VAT Summer 2010 20%+(?)
Our standard rate of VAT is relatively low compared to other EU countries.
The state of the public finances are dire and a big increase of taxes are needed to rectify the problem.
This has further been hinted at by the Tory leader at a recent interview. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8372839.stm (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8372839.stm) Why do you need an emergency budget??? Won't be tax cutting that's for sure.
You don't need to be a VAT expert to know that cars are going to get even more expensive next year.

Of course we will be bailing out the government, we do it every time and thats what were here for  . Thing is, they are all just as f**kin hopeless as each other, and contrary to what most people think, I think we have the best of a bad bunch running Britain, and thats the sad fact
Our standard rate of VAT may be lower, but we get taxed upon that VAT, then taxed on that and pretty soon we'll get taxed for taking a sh!t and breathing.

Enviromental issues are only a fraction of a stepping stone away from taxing air we breath  They always said if they could only find a way of taxing us for air!
As for the other we do of sorts if you think of what we use when we do this
They have been talking about this maybe VAT rise for a while now. They did think it would maybe even goto 18% in Jan but that seem to have been changed and they then started talking about a mid year rise as said in the op post,

VAT increase isn't always a bad thing as it will keep the value of second hand GTI's high (Those of us who are lucky enough to have them) (Sorry to gloat)
