Title: Chewing Speedo Drives

My '88 Gti 16v keeps chewing up speedo drives.  Onto my third one but after about 500 miles the speedo needle starts jumping and then goes dead.  When I take the drive out it's scored all the way round.

Any ideas as to why this is happening?
