Title: Cloth colour fade
Post by: James Gould on 23 November 2009, 09:14
You wont believe this question: does having a sunroof which allows the sun to shine through into the car increase the fading of the cloth colours?

If you're planning on keeping the car 20+ years, then it could be an issue.

Short answer is no. If you plan to leave the car in the sun for a long period of time just pull over the blind.

Depends if you have the roof open or just the blind. I have had one of my mk1s for 20 years now and yes the seats have faded a tiny little bit in the time, with me leaving the sunroof open (it does not tilt and its metal not glass) but not much unless you are a perfectionist you would notice it.

can't decide on the colour, Snoopy  -  look at my white v black post of earlier today  -  maye graphite blue  -  I love
p black and c white but bu**ers to keep clean  -

It would be peal black or graphite blue for me.
Infact a work mate has just got a mk5 GT in graphite blue and it parks outside my window everyday and its a colour that has really reallly grown on me over the past month or so hes had the car. Its different and i think thats why i like it.

As all older Vw's, the 1st thing the sun with do is faid the bodywork!!, so i wouldnt be worried about the seats just yet!!

Snoopy  -  you say you like graphite blue but you've gone for the other blue?! I'm going to be strict with myself....NO leather  -  it is bugging me but the cloth colours and stitching gives the cabin the colour that is missing in cabins with leather  -  the cloth has the character, the cloth hugs the driver's back more than the leather and I think the cloth will age better than the leather  -  I know all that and I must stick to that  -  sticking with cloth in some cars is penny wise and pound foolish, can affect resale vaue and some people think you've been penny pinching (not that I'm buying the car as a statement!)  -  I do think, with the Gti, that loads of people who can afford the leather still choose the cloth  -  it's not just a money thing, it's a matter of personal preference  -  I'm having manual, not because of DSG cost, but because I WANT manual.

You're just as likely to get fading by the sun shining through the other windows over time. I wouldn't lose sleep over it...

sunroof on current car (had for 4 years, I never close the blind and I've not had any problems with seats etc). Gone for one again for the Mk6 on order (does let in a lot more night, especially on Mk6 with the dark tinted rear windows (thinking of the little one in the back more than anything).

But as one of the other guys said, if you're worried, just close the blind = problem solved.

Thnx, JC - not tempted by leather? I've been tempted but am going for cloth - I like the look, more back support, should age better than leather, more Gti than cloth - no disrespect intended to you guys with leather

Nope - my current concern is that Newcastle haven't scored yet - hoped we'd do a Tottenham - mind you, Spurs were only 1-0 up at half time...
