Have done various searches but can't find something similar so any help would be great.
Car has just had new gearbox - re-built anyway - but gear shift remains difficult - sometimes goes straight into first no problems, other times feels rubbery and is difficult to put into gear. Also when engaging first the reverse lights flash briefly - Also the gearstick itself seems to rotate a bit on its own (sometimes I can accidently put it into reverse rather than first - amusing at the lights) - is there a way of tightening it up - the bushes etc have all apparently been done, but I think they need tightening up / aligning with the alignment tool - but any ideas on what I should focus on?

sounds liek you need to replace the housing under the car, have a read of the linkage faq guide, that should help :)

GSF sorted me out with everything for the gear linagek came to around £30 ,you might need to get your gear selctor sorted out so it sits in every gear right , there is a tool on ebay that is just a sheet of metal taht holds the gear lever in the perfect place then you just tighten it up ,
Maybe focus on the alingament but that does sound bit odd , that its going all the way left not stopping in 1st and is doing the push down bit into Reverse
