Hi guys,i am considering trading the mk3 gti in for a mk4 v5 and really just wanted some advice as i dont really know alot about mk4s or the v5.
It would be used as a daily run about so i need to know what they are like to drive,fuel consumption and also if they have any known faults to check if i go look at one.any help or advice would be gratefully recieved. :smiley:

Ive had a couple with high spec , but did not keep them long

buy the 1.8T as its much better  :wink:

Without trying to tell you what to do, there really isn't much point in the V5. The only real benefit you find in the V5, as Billy stated, is that most of them have a slightly higher spec.

They only have 170bhp (be careful, some earlier models came in 150bhp form) and the fuel consumption is pretty poor. Your much better off getting a 1.8T as its by far the superior engine. A 1.8T with a remap (which in my opinion is ESSENTIAL if you buy a 1.8T as, lets be honest, its very underpowered in standard form) will see you leaving V5s for dust as well as leaving them at the petrol station.

Just out of interest what attracted you towards the V5?

as already stated above by Alan and others you prob best off going with the 1.8T miles better on fuel, more fun, and with teh right mods are pretty damn quick!!! I dont really see the point of the V5 as it just doenst makes sense at all unless you want the 4WD set up but if your after that id say skip a step and look at a R32. as if you got a V5 you will be disapointed with the power guess its down to your budget and by the looks of things i would say 1.8T FTW

V5 is 2WD  :tongue:

V6mo and R32 are the 4WD badboys

Anyway you're all missing the point

I'm pretty sure you can get V5s in the 4motion variant? I'm 99% sure I've seen a V5 4motion Pissat  :undecided:

Yes, you are correct. :)

And as for fuel consumtion, it really is not that bad. I get a good return and like with anything, if it is maintained well it will run right. Ben at R Tech can remap these so from the 170 you should see 190. Overall drive is smoother and a comfortable ride. Do I regret getting my lovely smooth passat with 170? Nah, it's a comfy ride.

Pissrat is a little different from the Golf though isn't it  :tongue:

info on the www is confusing - some say its 2WD and other sites say 4WD  :undecided:

Always thought they were just 2WD   :huh:

thought about a polo diesel? great daily, cheap on fuel and insurance, get a white one as its the new black!

I guess what attracted me to the v5 is the smoothness of the v5 engine,but I did think it would be abit juicy for a daily,I have my mk2 16v to have fun In so am looking for something smooth with abit of luxury and the v5 seemed a good choice,I'm just bored of my mk3 really it's getting old now and am not as passionate about it as my mk2 so just want to get sumink newer and easier to drive rather than spend money on it when the time comes,I'll have a look at the 20v turbos,thanks for the advice  :smiley:

So does a 1.8T with a Milly . . .

Really don't think they are worth it. For the sake of a "smooth" engine you'll be better off spending that little bit extra and go the whole hog and get the 2.8 V6.

I agree, but you get the 4WD in the V6 and 200bhp vs 200bhp (ok the V6 weighs a bit more) there isnt going to be much in it.

I'd still rather have the 1.8T.

MK4 and bends dont really go to well, 4WD or not. You would need some choice mods to make the MK4 handle better.
