Hi all, I have a nasty oil leak from where the oil cooler fits against the upper circular flange (the one with the pressure/temp sender)
Gave it a good clean up, its definately not coming from the senders, it only leaks when the engine is running and is pretty rapid. Is there a seal in there I can replace easily or is it likely to be something more serious? 1990 8v PB by the way.........

yep there is a seal between the oil cooler and filter housing, I'd put a new cooler on there at the same time as well, the old one will probably wait a week after you do the job then die

Thanks RJ, the oil cooler is a newish VW part fitted by the previous owner 18 months ago according to receipt so should be OK (no receipt for the seal though, I wonder if the old one was used?), I'll just get the seal and have a crack at it this w/e. Going to do thermostat, black temp sender & leaky seal on the water flange on the g'box end as well while the coolant is drained out. Just good that the oil seal went before I did all the other stuff I suppose

when you do the leaky flange on the head check the head for pitting

Yes, I had that really bad on my 16v, gave it a real good clean and smoothed it over with Araldite.......worked a treat
