think this is pretty common seen fair few posts about wobbles and knocks in the steering but im at a loss.
steering is sold seems to jerk a bit when turning and hitting bumps etc.. also when i hit 55+ it feels like i got arthritis steering wheel shakes but car doesnt its solid on the road as a passenger wouldnt even notice it. ive gone over tracking balancing and ball joints im thinking its probably the a bush in the steering or dampers but this is my first golf and am still getting to know her.
if anyone can help be appreciated.....

i had the same sort of problems on my last golf it turned out to be that i was missing some drive shaft bolts holding it all together, might be worth a look, also check ur wheel nuts are done up too, read some one found this out to be there problem
-
wheels nuts are fine but you might be onto something with the drive shaft as it failed mot cause the boot on the joint was missing didnt bother to check if the shaft and the joints where ok :S do it tomorrow when i got more light.

good luck fella, i also had a rubber damper on mine split this caused vibrations too but not like u describe
-
CV joints,
tracking maybe out?
spigget rings? which im finding hard to find myself.
-
tracking is good had it checked today and the wheels balanced.
-
spigot rings are usually the cause. are you running aftermarket wheels?
-
Try the top strut bearings! This cured mine!
After I had changed CV joints/ wheel bearings and CV boots etc... :-\
-
i got original wheels on the car 14" tear drops.
to be honest we been over so many times and looked at everything its like redcap's done change everything till we get it :S after 15 years im sure it could do with it.

I had really bad shakey steering recently, any braking or speeds over 60mph and it felt like i had square wheels :o
I took it into the garage and asked if they could check it out, it was caused by warped discs on the front!
New discs and pads and its fine now ;D

sounds like the cv joint. With the boot missing the grease goes missing.
Maybe worth checking. You will find the shaking getting worse over a period of time if it is.
