Hi recently got myself a mk2 GTI off here with 16v engine. I have driven a good few thousand miles and it drove like a dream, however the other day it started sputtering and every time you tried to accelerate all power cut then it surged forward, it was sporadic at first and would drive fine for say a few miles and then started doing it then fine, unfortunatly driving back late the other night it died. Now wont start, it starts rev's to 2000 rpm then instantly dies, the engine has been pressure tested fine, Dizzy changed just for good measure but still know luck, my mechanic freind thinks it is too do with metering head? He can not be 100% sure and I wanted to see any of your suggestions as too whats wrong with it.
Cheers guys

have a look a this vid:

the meter head plate should lift up quite easy like that. i had a prob w the meter head on my valver, the flap was very hard to lift up, the needle that controls the fuel flow was sticking, so i took it out and cleaned it w petrol. is there high pressure fuel at the meter head, (bottom r/h banjo nut on the meter head me thinks )
i would first thou suspect fuel pump under the car. (the expensive 1). turn your ign on and that 1 you should hear run 4 bout 2 -3 secs. if it doesnt check 2 c if the pump is getting a feed b4 buying a pump  if that pump is ok, the 1 in the tank might have failed u can hardly hear that 1 in mine.

The meter head lifts freely, and when i turn ignition i do here an electronic whining/ buzz for a few seconds. I have found a metering head for 30 quid worth a shot? to change and see what happens????

They are a gamble s/h but worth a try.

disconnect the main pump under the car, and repeat the test. you should hear the in-tank pump prime, if not its dead and needs replacing.
-
Get them to check the fuel pressure - mine did this and they spent ages mucking about with the metering head - despite the fact I said check the fuel pressure - the main fuel pump still buzzed (but was quite loud) but was in fact knackered - the car used to start but as soon as I touched the accelerator it would die / after a couple of minutes it would die anyway.... it could also be the in-tank fuel pump - and this is cheap and easy to replace and you can check its buzzing as per RJ's message.

if lift pump checks out may be worth changing the fuel filter, mine just decided it wouldnt start anymore one evening. the next day it fired up fine, but then wouldn't start again after i got to the shops. New filter and it was all good again :)

When, the car was starting to die, there was a louder whining noise coming from under car? just wondering after an above post if this then would maybe head more towards fuel pump than metering head. and as far as I remeber it never used to whine as loud when it primed as it does now if i try and start it.
-
thats a symptom of lift pump failure, if lift pump dies main pump has to work harder to supply fuel and it often rund dry which is why it sounds loud. if its been running like that for a while the main pump could be damaged as well :(
-
Would an indication of this be also, difficulty starting car on occasion, now it was fine when left for say 8 hours plus, but if I left it for say 2-5 hours I would then try and start it and It would turn but only fire up if i gave it some gas? If so I think that must be the problem. Lift pump failure? how much is one of those going to set me back?

could be a separate issue, but I'd not be worrying about that yet, just get the bugger going then worry
gsf do em for cheap:
18389 FUEL PUMP-IN TANK G2 16V 2/86 >10/91 21.50
fingers crossed that'll sort it, but you may need to get a new main pump :(
keep an eye on ebay, they come up now & again for cheap. Get a bosch one if you can!

Right, removed in tank pump and tested across 12v and it worked fine, then teste power to it, no feed at all to it. When i switch on ignition one bit of fuel pumps through then pumping stops even when cranking over no more fuel is pumped out of tank, checked fuel pump fuse and seems fine but it must be a power issue. Any ideas around wiring or what could be stopping power come through?

Right definatly not power or pumps, pumps r working and power is fine, metering head is next bit to elimnate, question for someone on here, when the engine is started normally and u release the key off starter it dies instantly, when holding it on starter it will run for about 5 secs then die, but for this five sec's no fuel comes out the top of the metring head on the pipes that go to the injectors should i see petrol coming out????

so is the fuel pump running while the engine is cranking or not? becasue it should!
