hi just signed up,im nik,can any of you guys help, i bought a mk2 16v a couple of months ago,it had a broken speedo cable, anyway ive just got round to putting a new cable on it.this is where my problem starts,i did a 100 miles or so all fine, happy days, then all of a sudden the cable has decided to start dragging gearbox oil up it and running out inside the car behind the clocks etc,has anybody else ever had this problem?
-
i have had exactly the same problem. speedo cable snaped and replaced it but keeps pulling up oil. i just pulled it out of gearbox quite a while ago now and havnt bothered to try to figure it out. (pluged hole in top of gearbox) 30mph is roughly 2500rpm in 3rd lol

gearbox breather is blocked
-
cheers, tried to find a gearbox breather with no luck, any ideas where it is on the gearbox roughly
-
i has some photos of 020 box so i'll have a looky later
-
thanks danny great help much appreciated
-
think the breather is a black cap that sticks up behind where the clutch cable adjuster is on the gearbox, had a look at mine today and it was the only thing that looked like a breather
im sure danny may confirm or refute

I vaguely recal some early box have a vent at the front where the great big nut is just in front of the clutch cable, could be wrong on that as it only very vague recolection
-
found a breather for the gearbox blew it through carefully with an airline,it wasnt blocked, refitted speedo cable and its dragging oil up the cable, what know because im stumped
-
just wait until it drips on the pedals
-
Try dropping the oil and refilling with the correct quantity and specification.
-
or use the plug on the side of the gearbox?
get the wheel off and put a level on the slam panel, raise car until its level and remove the plug. if oil comes out its been overfilled
