Title: Does this sound right?
Post by: kdiz on 16 November 2009, 19:44
Hey guys, so I am 22 yrs old and just bought a golf mk2 gti 8v but I am still learning and need insurance for it [ i know most people won’t agree with getting it but i love the car what can i say ], anyway I have been quoted £1,200~ for 3rd party fire and theft.

Was thinking of calling HIC to see if they can match it or beat that if they even insure provisional drivers. I tried the online form but it didn’t return anything back  don’t know if it takes a day or so to get an email back.

Does £1,200~ seem ok or do you think it's possible to get it a bit cheaper either with HIC or somebody else that doesn’t feature on go compare?

Cheers

Sorry, dont think we have any underwriters that will take a provisional licence holder on a gti

In the current climate I don't think that figure is too bad Kdiz.

Provisional license - that's another matter altogether.

Best of luck.

Can't you just do the dodgy parents on primary driver

As a provvy user - you can hardly drive it without them about anyway!

Hi Kdiz,

Our criteria is similar to HIC in relation to licence holders, albeit with us (due to our purely covering performance cars) you would have to hold a Full UK licence for at least 1 year and have a 1 year NCB earned in your own name for an everyday vehicle.

I've owned 7 Golf Gti's over the years within my driving history and I can understand as to why you fancied a Golf Gti, one thing that hasnt been mentioned and would be worth checking is that from what we understand the Underwriters providing cover for provisional drivers actually increase your premium/terms once you pass your test.

This being due to your no longer being accompanied by your parents and being out on your own whilst gaining experience.

To avoid a surprise may be worth checking the cost implications with the people that have quoted you already.

Kind regards

Tony

Ps. We'll look out for you once you've held a full licence for a year and have a year's NCB
