Title: Tornado Red
Post by: James Gould on 16 November 2009, 14:04
don't scream  -  this really is the last thought....Metallic paint is supposed to be the most important option when considering resale value  -  I assume candy white is an exception in the case of the Gti  -  what about tornado red? -  looks good but will it mean a devaluing of the car when I come to sell?
I'm still finalising the spec today  -  this is not me prevaricating...I would have gone for white (going for the 3-door and white looks great in the 3-door) but just too nervous  -  just a bit of dirt and the car doesn't look great  -  red still looks ok if a bit dirty  -  love black but want a bit of fun and that, to me, means got to go red or white.

We have DBP Edition 30, when we picked it up, it looked mint and was glad we picked that colour, however it does not look as good when dirty, and shows up dirt a lot.

We have just orderded a 3dr GTi in white, I was a bit nervous, but not because of the actual colour but because I have a white company Volvo already!

As for white and dirt, I don't think thats the case, it still looks ok when a little dirty IMO.

Was considering red, but on the mk6 the grill does not stand out that well.

Time will tell, but I'm looking forward to the new one.

Dave

At least you are consistent with your decision making

White isn't actually that bad when dirty. Unless it's 'seriously neglected' dirty. I know it's a very popular choice but I think white is going to look out of date in a few years. Red has always looked good on all GTI's over the years. I think the best colour choice though is the one unique to the GTI - carbon grey.

Carbon Grey is available for the GTD too.

Red, White, Grey doesnt really matter all look good and better when clean.

The white or red are not metallic paints for the GTI.

I have a white GTI and I think it looks class. My test drive GTI was red and I didnt think it looks as nice as red, but of course thats my optinion. I've also seen some pics of red on here and they look great.

As for resell value, as another chap said in a previous thread, just buy what you like now, not for resell value in 3 years time.

Hi, Kev
I know that the red and white (and the 'solid' black) are non-metallic/pearlescent  -  that's why I'm asking if the red will have a negative effect on the resale value (metallic and pearlescent being such a 'must')  -  you happy with the white? no regrets that you stayed away from the red?

Thing is James, the colours of cars are so varied by people that for every person you meet that likes white, someone next to them will like black and someone will like red etc etc. Even with me and my misses, I wanted white and she wanted black.

In my opinion, it wont have the slightest effect come resale value for the reasons I said above. For every person looking to buy a Red one, there will be someone else looking to buy a Black one etc.

On the other hand  I've also heard people say that black never goes out of 'fashion' so will always be desirable.

I dont think you will have any problems selling a GTI regardless of the colour, well maybe if it was bright green.

Thnx, Kev  -  I'll kick the pink option into touch....seriously, I'd have the white as it's so Gti, it's fun, it's kind of what I want the Gti for  -  fun -   just worried that it'll only look good for 30 mins after I clean it but if you say that's not the case and that you're happy with it, I might go for it...

I don't blame you asking as many questions

Only thing I didn't order with ours was Xennons, which I really wish I did do now, and keep thinking of phoning the dealer to add them, but then its a grand option, which is way over priced for me.

Did you opt for them, or are they on your list?

There will never be the difference in part ex price between metallic and non metallic cars that there is when new, ie you'll never get you're money back. In fact i'd be surprised if you get half of it back. Of course it depends what value you put having metallic whilst in your possession.

White might be a bit of a fad colour, but its one that you can get away with on GTI, whereas perhaps a bit more risky on a  lesser model (SE etc). Red doesn't show the dirt that much and blends well with the rear light clusters for a more integrated rear.

Flat black is fine if you are paranoid about car cleaning and have no children or pets, but is one colour that if not looked after shows the neglect and could devalue your trade price.

Hi, Dave

Just no use for Xenons  - hardly any night driving and if I do do any, it's suburban driving  -  no country roads at night

thnx for the post

Agreed.

There will be a raft of white MKVI GTi's out there in three years, it does seem to be a fashion colour at the moment, but it's trump card on the GTi is it really suits this colour, so shouldn't be a problem shifting it.

I love the look of a white car, but would I want to own - and CLEAN  - one? No.

I dont think you will have any problems selling a GTI regardless of the colour, well maybe if it was bright green.

+1.

There surely can't be THAT much difference between colours? Used MKV's don't hang around for long on forecourts, so there is surely no reason the MKVI won't be the same... unless it's Kermit green or something... :afro:

Agent Orange?

Kermit Green?

There are colours no self-respecting car should have to be seen in.  Fortunately VW doesn't let you spec them.

James, i'm biased as I have red but I love red, a classic colour (especially for a GTI), didn't want to pay more for metallic and didn't want white because even though it is a fashionable colour now, fashions come and go. In three years time white might not be as desirable as it is today.

Plus red cars are safer (apparently), natural warning colour?

Though white, gossa, should be a safe bet with gti - didn't fancy pearlescent black? Carbon grey? Interestingly, the brochure adopts red as the colour to best present and showcase the car...

I had a DPB (deep pearl black) Scirroco, bugger to keep clean. There seems to be some negative comments on keeping white clean/unblemished.

I like red me, it's fast....VROOOOMMMM!!!!!

But, colour is the simplest choice out of all the options, surely one colour must 'speak' to you the most????

White is classic but so is red - red is the choice - writing out the spec now - no more thinking and, if I do start questioning again, I shall perform a labotomy on myself!
