Title: MK1 Parts availability
Post by: rupsol on 15 November 2009, 10:22
Hi newbie so go easy on me. I have owned every GTI made by VW but my first and only real love was my MK1 on a Y plate in rare Atlas grey. Sold it in 2000 and regret it ever since. As I got older and fatter so did the GTi. Biggest disappointment in my life was owning a MK4. I am now going thru a mid life crisis and want another one to restore and tweak. As I havent been on the scene for nearly 10 years just wanted to know what the parts availability was like for Mk1's? ie Body panels/interior trim etc. Are they now expensive? Also can you get hold of the original seat material to reupholster the interior. Most cars I guess will be rusty and need new wings/arches front and rear valances etc. Mine did and that was 10 years ago! Not bothered about engine condition as want to drop in a TSR 2.1 engine. Want a standard looking car with a big motor. Any help would be appreciated

hi mate welcome back to mk1's!

parts are generally not that difficult to come by, theres always people breaking them, and crazyquiffs sell some of the most obscure parts you can think of! see here:http://www.golfmk1.co.uk/

true a lot of mk1's are now rusty as hell, but if you look around carefully there are still a lot of good honest solid cars out there.
i bought mine (91 cabrio so younger than most) very cheap and it has literally NO rust anywhere.

just take your time and look around, unless you enjoy welding/bodywork!

hope you get the car you want!

would also suggest joining mk1 owners club... costs £15 but if you are buying a lot of parts the savings you'll make will be significant

Thanks chaps - good advice. What about the seat material? And has anyone a MK1 with a 2.1TSR motor before. What sort of HP does it put out. At a guess I would say 150 odd at the wheels. Will I need a different gearbox/brakes to cope?

if your going for more than standard power there are a few options available to you braking wise -

keeping with standard 239mm, mk2 GTI 16v Servo and 22mm master cylinder, braided lines, grooved and drilled discs, and something like EBC greenstuff pads.

or,

G60 brake conversion, although the brackets for this are a bit pricey, im sure they can be knocked up cheaply enough if you had em custom made, its only a small bracket at end of the day.

my valver is running similar power at the mo, and im going for the first option.when i go over the 200bhp mark ill upgrade to g60 brakes all round.

gearbox wise, standard 020 box should be fine providing its in good health, but obviously your going to want an uprated clucth.

hope that helps

Dean

thanks for this Dean - the problem with the MK1's is clearly bodywork. Virtually every car I have seen for sale has issues. Guess I need to factor in a grand or so for body issues then the motor .... this is going to be expensive lol

Final question and I will stop harassing you all - I have seen a couple of Mk 1's with a G60 engine conversion. I know I said I wanted standard but..........are the G60 motors reliable and are spares readily available? I am presuming that this enging is a 16v motor with a supercharger bolted to it? I know Jabbasport rebuild them etc but at what cost. Just thinking whether be cheaper to buy one already sorted

its an 8v with charger i think rebuilds are 30thousand or so, there are alternative chargers available from bahn brenner which provide more power, chips and smaller pullies are available for the g60 to up power also

altrnatives and more straight forward conversions are the 1.8kr 16v and the 9a 2.0l 16v

as said the only real issue with G60 is the rebuilds on the chargers.

the 30k interval gets shorter the further you take it, if its a seriously ported charger the interval shortens a fair bit, a friend of a friend has had his charger ported about as far as it can be, uprated everything etc, think he has to get his done every 15-20k.

16v is a piece of cake, i did mine with basically no experience ever doing a vw engine swap and the majority of stuff was very easy indeed. wiring i gave to someone else to do, everything else i did, an like i said, im a mechanical monkey!
