Will my 1990 Golf GTI, make it on a 340 mile round trip ? answers please :D
-
depends if its f**ked or not
-
Well, i'm not too smart on mechanics, i thought my last mk 2 was in great condition unttil i became stranded 50 miles from home with a knackered engine.
Despite all the problems i keep coming back to golfs, this is my 3rd mk 2 :)
-
two weeks ago i done 340 miles in mine - now worries
-
I drive Glasgow > Manchester (220 miles) and back again quite frequently without bother, but it all depends on the state of your car!
-
mine never broke down for 12 months apart from the odd flat battery last winter then one day on way to work my clutch cable decided to snap in an inconveniant place and today ive found my accelerator has about 3 strands left on it
they are old cars and stuff breaks when it wants but on other hand new cars break when they want also
get some breakdown cover to be on the safe side

AA relay ftw
-
yeah, i got my breakdown ready, although i'm in two minds about taking mine. my friend has a 2002 punto with no breakdown cover, it's going to be a gamble :)
-
Do you have any reason to think it wouldn't make it???
I've done about 600 miles this week in mine, including a 400 mile round trip.
I'd feel more confident doing the trip in a Mk2 daily rather than a Mk2 weekend car.
-
well i've only done around 200 miles in it since i bought it 4 weeks ago, and going on the record of my last two golfs i'm a bit worried, haha. I'll let you all know how i got on, or whether i chickened out and went in my mate's car
-
mine did a nurenburg mission without issue other than a cv boot
-
99% of mk2s must have done over 100k miles and you're wondering if it will do 340 !
-
nurenburg mission
sounds like the wrong kind of rally
-
i just did a 600 mile round trip in mine, and it was fine, like everyone else has said, it depends on the condition of your car. if you drive it hard a lot and it doesent break, then a 300 mile journey should be fine.
common sense?

my 8v did 550 miles round trip without a peep! also if yours is an 8v prise the top off your afm and wind the wheel up in it by 3 clicks for 60mpg+ but for god sake DONT LET GO OF THE WHEEL!

Say what??? That needs explaining!!!!!
-
+1
-
8v GTI, 60mpg? surely that's 60mph
Please do explain what that does and if it is safe for continued use.
-
it controls the air fuel mixture doesnt it? i find it hard to belive you can get 60mpg without doing some damage to the engine or something?

There is also a switch under the spare wheel in the boot, normally it is set to 35 mpg - but you can flick it to 150mpg - but don't tell anyone, its a VW secret.

MFA on my valver is showing average MPG of 56! dont know how cus ive got a heavy right foot, but sayin that im not at the petrol station every 5 mins.
Go in the golf m8, enjoy the drive! chuck a few tools in the back. leave the punto at home!
-
sorry bodga, we went in the punto in the end. we made it there and back but his brake pads wore down to the metal on the way back. Oh well, at least we probably saved half on fuel  Speaking of the MFA, i know this might sound extremely dumb, but has anyone got a guide on how to use it? this is my first GTI and i haven't even figured out how to change the time on it yet :embarassed:
-
My clocks been wrong since I've had the car  There's two little holes on the clocks to poke and set mins/hours. Or you can wait until midnight and pull the fuse for the MFA.

it runs lean when you do it but i didnt have any problem, i had it slacked before and my mpg droped to around 30 for hardly any power increase. so i experimented , wound it up instead, pumped the tyres up to 40psi and did 560 miles to a nearly full tank call it 7 8ths if you will. i dont know the tech on it, just did the oposite of the tuning guide on club gti.
-
I went to france and back in the mk2 with a full car of people and it loved it!
-
its lasted this long so it must have started out as a good one.... mine did 800miles each way to/from france a few months back and it loved it. old dubs die quicker of underuse than overuse so go and drive everybody please

that is foolhardy mate 40psi on tyres is asking for trouble and making a gti run lean at average speeds is gonna stuff your engine in very short time  especially if you give it any welly
running 40psi is gonna lose you grip in adverse conditions and if your in an accident, police may take a very dim view

My mk2 Golf driver did 200 miles from St Albans to Doncaster without probelm, My mate's jetta gtd (now mine!) has tour nearly all EUROPE! Must be about 2,000 or 3,000 miles all way back home, without breakin down!
Normally I alway checking everything i.e oil, belts, water coolant, rubbers, cable and tyres before going any long journey.
