Title: 3year / 40000 mile service?
Post by: RMar on 13 November 2009, 08:35
My MFD is telling me a service is due in 1200 miles or 19 days...the car is just over 3 years old and has 45,000 miles on it. It has had 2 previous services and I was just wondering what should be involved in this service and how much it should be? Cheers

Third year is just an Engine oil and filter change I believe - well it is when you are on T&D.
Since you are at the 40k miles point, you may have more to do.
Its the 4th year service thats a biggie.
Do you have a DSG - if so, that needed an oil change at 40k as well.

40k is the big one, full inspection, should get brake fluid and a/c serviced at this time.  My 4 year 40k service cost just shy of £400 including brake fluid and a/c service.

There is a break down in the service book of whats needed....

There's loads of threads about service regimes, oils, intervals and 'when to do what'... Little search might help your quest for more info, buddy.

The brake fluid and coolant should be changed every two years (I think), but unless the A/c actually stinks or stops working, I wouldn't bother with servicing that, especially in a biggie like the 40k service.

Our resident mechanical guru Teutonic_Tamer and my independant garage both agreed on this.

All else ub7rm says is spot on :afro:

Yes.  I had it done as I was ignorant and in fairness the stealers had a good offer on at the time.  Even if they don't do an AC service, get them to change the pollen filter anyway - not 100% if its part of that service or not.  My a/c only started smelling after they disinfected it and I had to do it again myself with a £10 tin from halfords.  Worked a treat  :undecided:

We live in Scotland, buddy... What need do we have for A/c?

Just rung my local stealer...they quoted 201 inc vat and labour. Does this sound about right?

I had a normal 'yearly' T&D service done in July at a VW garage for £145, before I negotiated a discount of about £25.

The 'biggie' - the 40k service, with the belt changes, etc - should be nearer £350-400.... (?)

I'm totally braindead right now, but there are threads on here debating service regimes... They'll tell you more :afro:

Think my service was close to £300 before adding the brake fluid and a/c.  Sounds like a good price to me.  Belts aren't included in the service cost, that would be extra.  At three years you don't need that yet...
