should I choose the rear side airbags option in the 5-door? kids are 11, 7 and 2 - mixed opinions out there....some say they are good, some say that if the kids are sitting too close to the windows/doors, the airbags can cause serious injury - most of the time, the kids are 'in position' but I guess it would be dangerous if they fell asleep and their head tilted towards the windows - I have a feeling that the view from the forum community will be that whilst there are risks, the dangers of not having them are greater than the risks of having them - put the baby chair in the middle and the older kids at the sides? I guess a danger of having the 11 yr old at one side and 7 yr old in the middle is that the rear side airbag could knock the 11 yr old into the 7 yr old?? Apparently, if the kids have their heads at an angle when the bag inflates, it can cause serious neck injuries - all that said, surely the rear side airbags are at a level of sophistication etc by now that the risks associated with them even 3 or 4 years ago have been taken into account in the development of what we have now??
-
Airbags help to reduce injuries (mostly minor ones). Their pluses outweigh the negatives. Making sure your kids are safe is hugely important but at the end of the day if someone slams into the side of you, their injuries are going to be in the hands of fate regardless of airbags. Whiplash is often easier to overcome than a deep penetrating wound to the torso.
-
got to be - sadly, there are reports of car accidents which have produced terrible injuries BECAUSE OF seat bealts but no-one in their right mind would suggest leaving seat belts off because of a one in a million chance of the belt increasing the risk - thnx
-
I have specced the rear side airbags on my GTI for the same reason.
I was expecting to see them in the doors but they are in fact in the side of the supports next to the seat backs so would 'explode' outwards.
-
isn't that exactly what we, as parents, thinking of the kids in the back of the car, don't want?!
-
They come forwards from the sides of the seat to produce a cushion between the door and the occupant. Same at the front. If your small child is in a well designed car seat with side bolsters they won't be touched. The airbag deploying will push any arms or anything else in the way forward and assuming the limb is attached to a person, inwards away from the door - which is safe.
If a child had its head leaned against the door trim I guess they could sustain a whiplash type injury. However if they are restrained by a seatbelt it will prove difficult to do that, so again, the airbag will deploy safely.
The risk of injury to a child from an airbag deployment is tiny compared to the risk of injury from an impact sufficient to cause the airbags to deploy in the first place.

Thanks

you can spec rear side airbags?
erm.... i went for the xenons and the big alloys instead....

Rear side airbags in the 5-door - I prefer the 3 door but got to go with the safety options...

When you have kids you will understand
-
That's partly my point. I'm not a father yet, but it could happen in the next couple of years. Didn't realise you had to spec safety features, I assumed it would be std.
I mean imagine, heaven forbid, that there was an accident where the rear passengers were injured or died because the owner didn't spec the rear airbags. The owner would be inconsolable and VW would be facing a lawsuit on why they didn't make it standard.
We shouldn't be forced to choose for safety.
-
Absolutely!
Have you got your Mark VI yet? happy with decision to get the ACC? Happy not to have bothered with leather. Do you agree that Sat Nav is a waste of money considering that within a year or two, everyone will have Tom Toms on their mobiles - I think I can get a Tom Tom on my iphone for about 50 quid.
-
Yup I got mine in September. Yup very happy with ACC - though as I've said before, this is because I have loads of speedbumps and potholes in my area.
Very happy with RCD510 and no need for sat nav (RNS510). I use my 5yr old TomTom Go 300 which works perfectly fine!
Tho how will you mount your iphone?
When are you ordering? Don't foregt about the VAT increase

Hi
is it your first Gti? It's is my first - my wife had a Tdi 100 bhp a few years ago and we both loved that so the Gti..!! Maybe I wont bother with the ACC - my driving is 'flat surface' suburban driving and some motorway - would be annoying to spend 700 quid and sit in 'normal' 99% of the time. My little luxury will be the Dynaudio (though most of my car radio listening is to Talk Sport!) - mounting the iphone - I assume one can buy a stand but there's volume on the thing so sight of the phone isn't really necessary - I think I read that the phone prep isn't much good with the iphone. Leather - probably not - I just think it's unnecessaily over-specc'ing the car and the cloth is specific to the Gti - I also think the cloth stands up to age better than the leather and I'd worry about the kids scratching and ripping the leather - I also think the cloth provides more of a snug wrap to the driver's back. Got to have winter pack - not for me but the family loves the heated seats.
Xenons - they just don't scream 'buy me' to me.
Should be making final spec decision this week and ordering end of the week....(I'm driving my family insane!)

Try the iPhone out in the car before you buy TomTom using Google Maps or whatever. The Assisted GPS on there can be erratic I believe, especially at GTI speeds! You may end up needing to suction mount on the windscreen which may not be what you want. Also, not sure I like the idea of a junk call interrupting just when you need the Nav!

good point - thanks

yes - tho an uncle had a Mk2 GTI back in the 90s. Loved that so surprised its taken a while for me to get my own. I guess the Mk3s and Mk4s weren't much cop tho!

have you thought about DAB then? I believe TalkSport is on AM only, so if you get it on DAB that would be much much clearer.
I think I read that the phone prep isn't much good with the iphone.
correct - it doesnt work at all since it doesnt have RSAP - therefore get the Fiscon if you want this functionality. suggest you buy prior to taking delivery and gett he dealer to fit for you since you need to get them to reprogram your car to get it to work properly
....(I'm driving my family insane!)
i bet you are!
-
I don't know anything about DAB - good for AM, is it?
Just been for another tt in the DSG - I'm getting it - DECISION! I really couldn't detect the ACC changes on the roads I use so I wont bother. I like the Dynaudio. Part of me does want leather but part of me knows there's no point - the cloth bolsters do fit more snuggly round the driver's back and I just think they last better over time -some cars must have leather, eg the 'R' will look terrible with standard cloth (not Gti jacara) but the Gti and the cloth are 'related' - the cloth doesn't cheapen the Gti - and I hardly ever clean my cars so I'll never treat and condition the leather as one should do - I also think cloth is better with kids.
That's my take....ordering today/tomorrow....

DAB is digital radio. in my experience listening to AM in a car is very very painful... have to jack the volume right up and prone to fade out under bridges/ tunnels/ etc. Digitial radio on the other hand should provide crystal clear reception.
per the talksport website it is available on DAB and I have just confirmed thats its available on my kitchen DAB radio
its pretty cheap on the Golf and available if you're not speccing the rear camera iirc

......and there lies another dilemma  The camera is fantastic and not just a gimmick.
-
Don't give JG anymore dilemmas!
-
Can't have digi radio with rear camera?
-
NO. Its either or, I'm afraid
-
But JG, IIRC you didn't want a rear camera right?
No idea why you can't have the two together though.... anyone?
-
Yes, because it is built into the head unit so in effect they are different and not just an add on.

What's IIRC? I decided, as was going to have rear and front pking sensors, may as well get pk assist and camera - but I think DAB is better for me - like you, I would like to know why can't have both...
-
Thnx!
