Title: Proper cup holders
Post by: p3asa on 09 November 2009, 22:52
Came across this golf from a very large thread on this forum http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?cmd=print&id=4397743 (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?cmd=print&id=4397743) that had proper cup holders in the front and also in the armrest at the back. Far more functional for me. If only it had a sliding lid.

you're not kidding, that thread is huge!  a quick search couldn't track down any mention of cupholders though... where or why do you get those "proper" cupholders?  the front ones look a bit tacky tbh, tho the rear armrest ones are cool.

The front cup holders are just mk5 Golf ones, also found in the Scirocco and possibly other VAG cars.
These were fitted to mk5 Golfs that came without the centre armrest (ie. most of 'em). There are loads of fitting guides on the net that show how to do the conversion to the type mk6 Golfs have (which were fitted to mk5 Golfs with the front armrest.

Not sure about the rear one though, never had mine down yet and can't remember whether the mk5 had these or not as we hardly ever used the armrest in that car either.

Remind me - does the Euro Mk5/6 armrest have cup holders in it?

Mk6 no cup holders at the front armrest... at the back, yes..

Very similar to the Ford Focus ones - OK when you have something of the right size in them, but i put a small cardboard carton of orange juice in the front most one, accelerated and the damn thing fell backwards.  At least it was a hire car

I meant to ask does the Euro Mk5/6 rear armrest have cup holders in it? I recall seeing Mk4-style pop-out ones but that might have been in a Passat or Skoda.

On the mk5 with armrest they 'fold out' from the back of the armrest, not as trick as the mk4 ones were though.

Had the ones in the picure on my mk 5, not so good.

The beauty of the bottle opener/ slide drawer type is you can slide back the drawer to fit/grip any bottle or can size you want.

That's true hadn't thought about it like that. Although you are stuffed if there are 2 cups in there

Option 2 though, slide the bottle opener down to meet the fist cup/bottle and then the side down to the next one. Problem solved

No cup holder in the rear arm rest they in the Front arm rest at the back...

Sorry makes no sense to me
With the bottle opener in the middle, how can it be slid both ways?

it can be slid one way... to the detriment of the other

unless

you use the sliding cover?!

Look at the back of the front seats or armrest.  They're there somewhere.  You can even use them if the rear arm rest isn't folded down.

They are rubbish though. The ones in the armrest would have been a lot handier IMHO.

just for you madam rolfe i put on my shoes and wandered outside into the 4c night to check the back of my car... again.

the cupholders in the back of my car are between the front seats just below the vents.  some sort of clamping systems.

now.... where was my life again?!

you're not kidding, that thread is huge!

I had another look at that ginormous thread and it has partsmen on it giving prices and parts numbers for certain bits of the car plus dealers claiming to have slots left for golfs to be specced to their specification with an actual delivery date plus "a price of MSRP only, no dealer mark-ups"

Interesting as well that xenons only cost the americans £420

Ah, use the lid? Now if you had said that, it wouldn't have been as clear as mud

not quite, i mean both the bottle opener and the sliding lid

the bottle opener slides forwards and back a little in the thing holding it.  note not obviously when its resting in its other holding position at the bottom of the compartment.
