Title: 256mm brakes on late runout 8v's
Post by: tony_ack on 09 November 2009, 19:40
I read somewhere that the very last of the run-out 8v's had 256mm front discs rather than the 239's. Information on this seems to be sketchy at best though. Does anyone know whether this was the case?

ive got a runout 8v and that had the 139mm brakes, think the 256mm brakes as standard on an 8v is an urban myth

very very very few of them had 256 brakes,   were talking about what appear to be the absolute last of the line or a few days when vag din't have any 239 calipers i would think.

the only run out ones i have seen 256 on are K reg ones  and k reg mk2's ain't common

Werent the G60s on the bigger brakes? Thats what I have on mine but I dunno what size they are, might be a good idea for me to find out for when I need new discs n pads lol

As far as I know it is:
239mm - All Golfs including 8v GTI and very early 16v
256mm - GTI 16v
280mm - G60

I've been thinking about going to 256mm but I've heard it's a fair bit of work.

280mm would be nice but I guess not really necessary for an 8v, plus I'd have to either bodge it or lose the RAs

g60's had 280mm brakes

imo the 256 v's are like the 1.8 ltr cl's .   they are out there but there arn't meany at all and they probaly wern't intended production.  the 1800 1.6's were a factory f**kup the 256 braked 8vs probly a supply issue so they carried on makeing with the next part up.

have seen sh!tloads of gtis with 256 brakes tho most have been retrofited at some point but theses mods were been done to these cars when new so had pklenty of chance to happen

Jeez, god knows what mine are then. It stops well though and doesnt seem to get much fade when I kane it. I'll get the tape measure out tomorrow lol

Out of curiosity, are the VR6 brake 280mm aswell?

5stud mk3 are 280mm up to around 96, from then on they're 288. Not VR6 specific either, its an age thing. the early 280mm calipers & carriers on the MK3 are the same as G60 setup
