Had my first admiring glance today. Walking back to my car today at the supermarket with my shopping trolley,
saw a 2007 Golf TDI circling my car giving it the once over. :smug:
Now this got me thinking, I think the car is quite understated, and I was expecting more admiring glances, but is it just me? Or is it the new car syndrome?
Went for a run yesterday and here am I following the running in procedure and what do I see in my mirror? A Smart car right up my back side trying to overtake. “What the f**k says I. So keeping within the rev range, managed to outpace it.
Roll on 1000 miles plus.

i haven't had that many either. it does look like a regular golf with big wheels to most members of the public. enthusiasts can tell though of couse
interestingly, most MkV GTI owners blank me... but then again there are a lot of non-enthusiasts in MkVs due to the sheer popularity of them. the MkVI will be like that in a few years too.
-
I tend to get them from mk6 drivers if im honest
-
I'd give an admiring glance if only I saw one though. Still not seen one round my way.
-
My glances still go to the new Scirocco if I'm honest

Agreed a billion percent. Saw one today in the colour I would have too. I stopped in the street to watch it go by
-
Never seen a Mk6 GTI driven fast yet.
Never seen an ED30 driven slow yet.

I do the same with with any Aston or GT-R that goes past. See a lot of them on Chester Road, the road leading up to Old Trafford

I stare into Smart cars.
They look just like the old handicapped cars.
Try to see just who would buy them.

You obviously don't live anywhere near me then, 6.5k on the clock, remap, heavy right foot. Most people are still running theirs in.

Really??, in your oppinion of course.
I saw one today on the motorway and he was looking at mine as i was at his Black Mk6 Gti.
He put his foot down only to try and show off, but only to get a shock of me going past him quite quickly :smug:
I love to look at all Gti's if i spot them.

the only glances for me are from male chav's. i parked at a warehouse to buy some stock, not busy but suddenly all the staff started to come out, some for a smoke, gradually they all came out for a gawp. not many glances from babes as to them its just a golf. most dont know the significance or what car it is. i've had a few cars but the best one for glances was the audi tt, new shape when it first came out- because like the gti, i got one ready made, i got it b4 anyone else so seeing one was very very rare( only now do u see plenty of them). well ppl would glance wherever you went. one time i was at a drive thru, waiting at the window as u do.... chav's waiting at the carpark, drove intentionally to the exit area, waited a bit to have a gawp. ppl eatin inside, turning there heads- its funny, u try to look like u dont give a toss. worst thing is my bro likes to go very agressive on the throttle evrytime he passes girls or students. for me the tt is a babe magnet, so many girls glance, not the same with a gti- all u get is blokes (18-35yr olds)(im not gay btw). so the theory goes..... u like girls -go back in time and get a tt when it was fresh and rare... the a4 cabriolet which i had b4 the audi tt was also a babe magnet, head turner.
alot of it is due to being a new car, alot due to it being an audi. gti isnt really new/ fresh as the golf has been out awhile and design is quite subtle. also the fact that a golf in a babes perspective, "aint as sexy" , im assuming with confidence .
ppl with mark 5 gti's cant help lookin though. they cant help but feel second rated against my spanking new gti.

It`s all part of growing old

mk6s have as much presence as any other brand new car (i.e. the only people who are interested are other shallow 'brand new car' owners/aspirers.)
when you compare number of people looking at you, try a convertable down the main street with the roof down, or something that really stands out (i have felt particularly conspicious in an original beetle and a resto'd porsche 964 - and i'm someone used to driving something that stands out like a sore thumb)
-
How does having a new car make you shallow ?If no one buys a new car then there will be no future classics ,so not only are you poor but your also stupid.

re: shallow - did you attempt to read denyason's post? or the OP's post? as a car salesman i have a fair experience in the area (not that i would ever suggest that anyone i meet is like that; but there are two examples.)
it also means i could buy a new car any time i wanted for cost price.
and finally, don't fool yourself into thinking the mk6 will be a classic.
your also stupid.
teh irony
-
having something new makes u happy . it gives u a smile :smug:, you caress it, you love and drivin is a joy. but the older it gets, the worse u treat it. we all like cherishing new gadgets and gizmo's. i didnt buy the gti to pose, if i did i'd get a ferrari( 1/4 scale as i couldnt afford full wack). the responce is to the OP.
no one drives blind, you notice head turners, especially when u drive something new. we do it ourselves, who here doesnt like gawping at a porsche...... or a pretty lady or man(if u preferred)?
u wouldnt notice any glances if u drove something old and common. all i was commenting on was how different the glances were from the gti(mark 6) to the audi tt (mark 2)when it first came out. i'm sure someone driving a porsche would get many glances from women and men. but the gti is mostly blokes. did u know the gti is the most wanted car for criminals? so ironically "admiring glances" could backfire, maybe just maybe they want to steal it from u..
the gti is not for posing...... it makes sence, good re-sale value, good brand, great engine, practical, refined, spatious, heritage, technologically advanced, desired and so much more than for posing in.

funny because its true
Dont kid yourself shcockooh.. you cant afford a new car! so will probably never know what i feels like to get one
-
Gilly i bet you get a lot more admiring them nice new shiny 18s, they certainly transform the look
-
Glances may not always be admiring. Could be "look at that t0sser in his new ?????"

I stopped using the mk1 GTI as my daily because i got nothing but looks and people coming upto me in petrol stations etc. I hate been rude but theres only so many hours in the day i cannot talk to you all! It also gets unnerving when groups of hoodies or chavs do it. Were as our mk5 GTI gets little to no looks in comparison and hasn't done since day one (late 05). Yes you get the golf nuts but thats about it. Maybe part of thats down to the dark colour and people just think it just another golf. Infact thats one of the reasons i went for this colour again.
-
Today had a few people looking at the car; one was a R32 owner and another, a brand new GTD owner. IMO it is all relative, no matter what the new car is, you look at other cars of the same brand wither it be a GTi or a Citroen C2.
It’s not because you have a new car rather than “Does his car look better than mine
As per Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs its all down to esteem, where it’s a need for acheivement and respect by others.
-
ha ha ha I am laughing at reading Denyason's post... perhaps the blokes are looking at you coz you exuberate certain pheromones that attracts only men and pushes away women instead. Lately, I have had equal amount of guys and gals who come admire my car when I stop by at the supermarket. They feel the dual exhausts are very nice and asked how much I paid for the car etc etc.

Alot more notice!! they really do catch the light in the evening (esp when they are clean :lipsrsealed:)
definately make a huge difference to the looks.

My mates missus has one! Its currently on loan to me while shes in Norway for the forseeable future until my R comes! I've been driving it for the last 3 months, and likely will be for the next 4 months - and you should see the funny looks I get! 6ft 2" tall sitting in this weird looking car, tearing away from the lights
-
Smart to Golf R. That'll be a bit of a step change in performance...
-
A Volvo 240 will already be a step up from a Smart... unless its the Smart Brabus... then you might be getting less performance than a R...
-
not many glances from babes
Do you live in southern California.... er, dude?
-
Gilly i bet you get a lot more admiring them nice new shiny 18s, they certainly transform the look
How much for a set of alloys like yours? I think they are the bees knees!!
-
^ budget on £1800-£2000 with tyres nearer the top figure with decent tyres delivered and ready to fit.

SMART cars seem to be the 'fastest' cars on the road. Always hooning it around at breakneck speed.
Guy was killed in one last month near me. Got caught in the middle of a motorway pile up. Nasty.

Bloody hell, think I will just have to yearn for a set for the forseeable future.
