Title: Battery powered impact gun
Post by: AudiA8Quattro on 08 November 2009, 18:07
I'm after a new battery powered impact gun.
I've got a budget of about £300-350, any suggestions from anyone?
Thanks in advance

I think the snap on is about £450.
That would be my number one choice. However they don't seem that easy to get hold of, and its a bit over budget.
Is there any good alternatives?

Thanks for all the replies.
I was looking at the serenco powerhand wrench, but i found a review that claimed those wrenches are not producing the claimed torque.
This is the problem, plenty of makes claim big performance, but most sadly live up to it.
Danny_P, do the makita tools match claimed performance figures? i take it you are recommending them from your own experience.

have a lot of makita stuff here :)

tbh for what it is it's bloody cheep if you buy the tools bare, the batterys are expensive £55 a pop but been lithium ion there worth it.  all my cordless kit makita stuff is 18v LXT stuff.  the batteries are seriously good comapred to most ( battery seem to let most kit down )  i like that they charge bloody quick and give all the grunt to the last few moment then they stop, unlip nicads and nicel metal that just limp on for gages in a half arsed manner. hence i offloaded all my dewalt kit about 2 weeks after buying first makita

i got one of the bigger inpacters ether the btw450 or it predicessor .   never measured it's actual torque but it i enough and it pisses overe the cheep air ones and holds it's own with the better air ones. only problem is every bugger keeps on borrowing it.  the other reason i have so much time for makita is warranty and service  if you kill it lob it back to the dealer you got it from or just send it back to them and tell them you killed it few days later it actualy comes back mended, and if you need a pissy littel part for it you can get it.

was well inpresed with mine.   it's taken a right beating in the last year and done a lot of work and its still going strong.

milawakiee are soposed to be as good if not better than makita ( by reputation or at least that was the case ) but not got any or used any of that sort of there stuff

Thanks for the response Danny.
I was looking at a dewalt, i guess that's out the window then!
The makita looks good, but i do fancy the milwaukee, its cheaper and apparently more powerful?
450lb ft does sound a bit optimistic though.
What should i look for? battery amps or voltage?
The other one i like the look of http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Milwaukee-V28-IW-Impact-Wrench-Nut-Runner-BNIB-RRP-509_W0QQitemZ320445009859QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM?hash=item4a9c02cfc3
what do you think?

batterys are a funny one.  i go off the actual energy stored.     and it's charge time.

eg makita.     18v 3AH    18 x 3 = 54 watt hours.   thats how much actual energy is stored in the battery.   but the batterys ablity to deliver that power is just as inportant.  general rule for all batterys is the faster it can be safely charged the more current it is capable of supplying.

the makita will charge in 22 mins ( it pulls in about 9 AMPS )  so it can safely absorb power at a rate of 162 watt's per hour,  guestimation say it should be abel to supply at about twice that rate so it proably has the potential to run a 250-300 w motor. thats what really matters. big motors are cheep and easy to make.  makeing light compact batterys to run them isn't.  and none of the manufactures tell you anythign about the ablity of there batterys to give power.

but as a general rule of thumb.    you want 18v or more.  2-3 AH at 18v is fine.    as voltage goes up you dont need as meany AH   ( volts x amp hours for stored energy )  YOU WANT LITHIUM BATTERYS THEY ARE SERIOUSLY WORTH THE MONEY. they charge fast, they have long service life and   no memory effect ,(you can top up half full batterys or take off and use before theyve finished charging without knackering them)

the milawakie job also looks a bloody good bit of kit, and a 28v li ion battery will give some serious punch prob more than the makita ones

I have a Snap-On 12v impact gun and never found it lacking...it's a superb piece of kit.
Can't vouch for the rest, as I've only used the Snap-On one...

Cheers for that.
What i'm really interested in is if anything on the market performs as well as the snap on wrench.
