Title: Air flow meter - I know, bear with me
Post by: dadrathers on 08 November 2009, 12:28
OK got the air flow meter off the car at the mo. Intention was to clean up the electrical parts. But how the ?8&# do you get in to do this. And yes I have searched but cannot find anything in the masses of stuff that tells me how to do this. Resistances and stuff all check out with the multimeter.

Cheers.

If it helps, the lid to my bosch one on the digi fell off whilst out driving. Not sure if it is just glued together or what lol there were no screws in it or owt

Thanks Sir Digby - I would guess that it is just stuck on with silicone or similar. Mine is an 8v digi also. Just being extra cautious - don't want to bu**er anything up.

you can just lever it off with a screw driver, but its a sealed unit so shouldnt really need cleaning in there i would have thought .

yeah mate as Dan says I wouldnt bother, if its all checking out ok with the multimeter or whatever then I doubt taking it apart is gonna do anything. I used mine without a cover or ages, it got filthy and still worked fine. Are you having running problems? Hence wanting to take it apart?

I am hoping that cleaning the electrical stuff inside might help sort the popping in my exhaust. My searches have shown that whatever is in there can get electrically dirty like a switch and can suffer from 'tracking'. So I wanted to have a look and see if a blast of switch cleaner might improve things. If it doesn't I will try something else for my popping?

To be honest, if you have done the resistances checks, then leave well alone and use it. If there was something wrong with it, the resistances will be all over the place or you would get an open circuit.

replace the blue temp sensor and check the setup as per my digifant faq before you open this.  generally they dont go wrong but it is possible. find another from the scrappy before you strip yourts down, dont want to mess it up then have a non running car eh? ;)

MK3/Vento/Passat early 2.0 8v will have what you want, nick the isv of it as well. later ones use a different item which wont work. basically it has to look the same as yours!

Thanks all - I think I will take Darn Pb and RJ's advice and leave alone. btw already replaced temp sender with genuine VW and has been tuned following your faq, RJ. But still I get the popping in exhaust. Otherwise it is running very well. So I am looking and trying the less obvious things. All vac hoses relaced, new ISV, idle switch set correctly, new flying saucer and bung, new air filter and plugs at last service. Got dizzy cap and rotor on order, new genuine VW knock sensor.

Might replace the idle screw at next tune up just in case there is a small air leak.

Have I missed anything??????

im just thinkin out loud but if its poppin in the exhaust, its burning unburnt fuel in there. what colour are your plugs? injectors dribbling? im not to clued up on the digi but do u get pinking under load? timing out? does it pop if you run it w out the air flow meter connected?  :undecided:

do you have any blows in the exhaust? mine popped when my 4branch wasnt sealed properly.  as above I'd be on the lookout down the scrappy for a 2.0 8v afm :)

OK RJ I will see if I can arrange an AFM swap to see if it cures - will it run Bodga if it is unplugged?? I am not sure what colour the plugs are but they were only renewed at end of October. How do I know if I am dribbling (it happens when you get to my age - lol)? No pinking and timing is spot on.

Excellent service on the forum as per.

no it wont run at all with the afm unplugged. to check the injectors need to have the rail off and in a container, but digis dont often suffer from this.  Injector rail can be a pin to remove so I'd leave that for now,i guess you could have a sniff for fuel with the plugs out, but hardly a conclusive test

Are you talking exhaust popping on deceleration or backfiring?

If its just popping on deceleration then its almost definitely a leaky exhaust/dead baffle.

As I say it is running so well otherwise. Ben, on straightforward decelertaion i.e. just lifting your foot off the go-faster pedal, it does NOT pop. It is only when I change down say from 4th to 3rd as I approach a roundabout for example. No backfiring just a pop, poppity!! (possibly even one more pop). It has always done it since I have had the car (nearly 3 years) although it is not on every change down. There are no other giveaways with the exhaust leaking - might be good idea to get the exhaust to manifold connection checked out by the experts.

Cheers.

Mine used to pop whilst engine braking or on the over-run when I had a longlife stainless with single silencer. It still does it now with a standard gti exhaust but not as much as it used to. Wouldnt worry about it matey

Sounds exactly like a damaged baffle or air leak.

When I had a straight through backbox (literally just a piece of straight tin pipe) it did the exact same thing.

So, Ben, is the air leak likely to be at the connection to the manifold? Or anywhere in the system? If it is a baffle then the only cure is to replace I guess? I am not worried about Sir Digby just being a bit of an anorak and trying ot get it as near perfect as poss.

I know what ya mean. Have a listen underneath the car and see if you can hear any farty noises

Do farty noises in the car count??

It is quiet on tickover.

The noises are funny, its the odours that worry me lol. Could just be the baffles in the exhaust then as a few others have said. Or possibly an air leak. If its running alright then it might just be a case of living with it, or putting the stereo on, sultans of swing usually does the trick for me lol

You tried banging the exhaust with your hand?
Broken up baffle will rattle when you bang the offending box.

Not tried banging the exhaust - next time I have it up in the air I wil take a close inspection of the joints and do a bit of tapping.
