Title: Front seat keeps breaking on 3 door, is this a common issue?
Post by: JellyCat on 06 November 2009, 23:39
Hi.
I've got a 3.5 year old Mk5 GTI.
I bought a 3 door as thought it looked great, then we had a baby.
The front seat keeps breaking every 6 months or so and will not slide forwards or back.
Seems the cable or a clip keeps breaking. It's just gone again and the car is now out of warrenty so wondering how easy it is to replace the cable \ clip on the seat or if there's any instructions on the web on how to do this.
Noticed on the VW engineers report from the last time it was in, they took out the seat, then took off the seat back cover etc.

Now have a Mk6 GTI 5 door on order. Now the little one is 2 years old, noticed on the test drive that the 5 door is way better for getting the little one in \ out!

Hmmm I posted something in this a little while back. There's a 49p clip that breaks. Bugger to fit back and to describe in words or in a how to. Search my posts, if not here then on the other forum (sorry, on phone can't easily get to it for you), it might be that.

My drivers seat has stopped sliding too.  It tilts, but won't slide to let someone in the back.  However, when I'm sat on the seat I can
adjust it forward/back using the bar underneath the front of the sest :undecided:

Both my front seats wont slide back unless you continue to hold up the lever, is this right? or are they broke??

My drivers seat slides forward fine, but won't slide back again unless you lift the seat base.

Its rather annoying!  I wish I could fix it cheaply, but I bet its not that easy!

Ah nuts! the sliding seat clip \ cable looks like it's just gone again! Was fixed about 3 weeks ago by main dealer... again!
Downside the last time was just out warrenty, the up side is apparantly the fix came with a guarentee so.... looking at a free fix I guess.

When I say seat slide, when you sit on the seat and pull the bar under the seat it moves back and forward fine. This relates to the 3 door when you tilt the seat forward and it should then slide forwards to allow access to the back, and then back again to where it was \ memory.

It's very odd that it keeps going, seems to be very poor quality parts or a crap design. Felt a tiny, tiny bit of resistance and then though oh no it's not gone again..... and then then pop!

It's a total pain with kids! Learnt my lesson, got a 5 door mk6 on order (but looking at the problems with the guys who ordered in Aug and are now looking at March 2010, not sure if should have got a 2nd hand 5 door mk5 lol

Cheers for that, seems to be either cable or the clip.
It's gone again! Started to look at getting seat out, but remembered dealer fixed it about 3 weeks back (had to pay as just out of the 3 years), but good news is the fix was guarenteed for 3 years so will therefore just keep taking it back lol

I had mine looked at last week when it was in for a service and apparently the cable had come unattached from somewhere :undecided:
