Title: New mk2 GTI owner.
Post by: RTechUK on 06 November 2009, 21:46
Time to join the mk2 section me thinks.
I have just purchased a 1990 Golf Gti 8v and and mint Vr6 engine and loom..  So wait for all the questions as I aint got a clue when it comes to mk2s and Vr6 engines.

The "idea" is to build a car to enter next years Rally of the Midlands, as soon as I pass my BARS test at Silverstone I will be stripping the car down to shed some weight, and getting it to basic rally spec ready to give it my best shot next summer.   Once I have done the rally I would like to fit low comp pistons and turbo  kit.. and aim for some quickish 1/4 mile times.  And at the same time keeping the car on the road fully legal.

I will get pics up tomorrow.

Yeah I have noticed alot of euro look vws around here. I have wanted to vr6 my mk2 for ages but I dont have the tools and know how to do it. Thought about doing a G60 conversion on it as it looks like it may be alot easier to do the swap. Cant seem to find a lump complete with charger though

What happened to the mk2 turbo that you guys were doing a while back?

What happened to the mk2 turbo that you guys were doing a while back?

Still being done that one is,its going to be our flagship sprint car (when it gets finished) custom AGU engine being built with omex ecu,  The guy who built my calibra turbo engine will be fitting the mk2 out.  The car is still at Bens house.

Well what can I can about this mk2 GTI? I fecking love it... sooo much fun to drive and the wife likes it aswell.

I have had a change of heart with the new Mk2, the 1800cc 8v lump is staying in place I didnt realise how good the 8v engine was. Load of fun down B roads.  So the VR6 idea is out if the window.
I am going with a performance cam, 4 into 1 down pipe, Jetex full system,  Throttle bodies or twin carb? Software WOT mapping,

Going to Jetex this afternoon to collect exhaust, then off to collect my V-max coilovers. Then wait for post man to bring me my ebay 4-1 manifold, vibratechnics front engine mount and gear select repair kit.

Next thing it to find the right cam, I have a few tuners to call later to see what they say I should use,  When all the mk2 tuning was rage I was stuck tuning Vauxhalls. :embarassed:

I am loving the car..I feel like a kid again.

I cannot get over how well it handles in stock from, it puts a mk4 gti to shame sorry to say.
But now with the coils overs fitted its brilliant, I have to say its the most FUN car I have ever owned, I have a 310bhp 4x4 Calirba turbo , had a Astra redtop mk2 225bhp with full race spec engine running throttle bodies mbe management that I fully built and mapped and spent over £3.9k on just the engine... Then I buy an old £500 motor which is more fun than both my toys put together.   Ben and Chris have been telling me for month to but buy one and join the club.

Next mod is to get the hydraulic hand brake fitted to the rear brakes.. :smug:

Is it me or are those clips upside down  :lipsrsealed:

Clips = Clamps?

They sit fine the way they are, the only reason to turn them would be if the threads was the lowest point under the car causing them the catch, The boxes and subframe sits lower so there is enough clearance.  Its good to do them up in that position using the air gun..lol

Oh yes!!

Fitted a pair of brand new bottom arms then went to drive the car off the ramp and one wheels went one way and the other one went the other way?????

One if the bottom arm where wrong and 1.5" too long... Blooming motor-factors.

All fixed now apart from a major oil leak comming from a hole in the sump made worse by me picking at the rust around the hole...  OEm sump and gasket £70 trade..

EDIT - On my G60 i had an asymetric (cant spell) cam, apparently this is good for an 8v
