Title: Hold Delivery For New Plate?
Post by: Ivan on 06 November 2009, 12:52
Advice please.

With delivery moved from BW48 to BW02  Should I take delivery early Feb and enjoy a great car on a 59 plate or should I ask the dealer to to hold on for 2010 plate in March then get the bad boy?

Am I missing out on resale if I take 2009 plate?

It's a good question. My initial response is as long as it's registered in 2010, whether it's 59 or 10 doesn't make any difference .... to me, but may have a slight drop come resale; dunno.

If we tell you what to do, will you do it, or will you ask for advice, read through all the replies then just do what you want anyway ?

How polite. Isn't that the exact point of a forum? Ask a question, receive a variety of answers, make up own mind based on newly gained information.

It's been answered a bajillion times before when waiting for 09 and 59 plates. also the point of a forum is to actually read it too, is it not ?

I plan on holding out till 1 March 2010 if my R arrives early - unlikely though that may be.

It depends how long you intend to keep it. If you plan on changing it after 2 years then the newer plate will make it worth a little bit more.

I tend to buy my cars, stick my number plate on it so that the neighbours and clients dont know I've got a brand new car, and keep them for a good few years. That way age or depreciation don't really factor into the equation.

for the few quid more you will lose having it on a 59 plate compared to how much your going to lose as soon as you roll it off the forecourt does it really matter.  :undecided:

It's more the simple pleasure of driving round with a 10 plate for 6 months.

Private plates FTW. Then people dont know and you dont care how old your car is.

People still know. The amount of time i have had people from work or nearby streets/my street say something along the lines of "You must have got a great discount with it been just before the new plate"

VW will pay the extra 2.5% VAT in you take Delivery before March http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/volkswagen-world/news/item/193

If I was you, I'd be taking it as soon as; when it comes to selling the car just make sure you make a point of stating it is 2010.
I'm waiting for a company car so my opinion is somewhat biased. The difference after three years will be 'relatively' insignificant.

Makes bugger all difference at trade in. I chopped in a Scirocco for my Golf and it was one of the first registered 58 plates, got book value same as an 09.

If you're getting clobbered on the VAT then just get it ASAP.

General consensus seems to be getting it ASAP.

I was 50/50 but as soon as VW can build it I’ll take it.  + I'm waiting so long, VW come on...

Cheers for the advice folks

Interesting terms and conditions.
From that link
"ordered between the 29th October and the 30th November 2009 and delivered and registered to private retail customers between 1st January and 28th February 2010. At participating retailers only."

I've just gone through this. My order was within the VAT cut off, and could have had the car on a 59 reg with a delivery in mid Feb and save on the VAT.
But as I've elected for a 2010 March 1st reg I got hit by the 2.5% VAT rise.

It's swings and roundaboutes and will prob will ballance out:

59 reg = lower resale as older plate, but you shoulds save on the VAT as VW pick this up to end of Feb.
10 reg = better resale as newer plate, but you get hit on the VAT.

VAT 2.5% worked out for me about £600 due to spec of the car, the dealer advised the drop in resale due to the new plate & year would be about £700- 900 in the long run (seems year change plates such as 05 to an 06 has a bigger drop than an 05 to a 59).

Not sure what the state of play is if VW push out your build week \ etc so your delivery is an 10

59 or 10 plate won't make bugger all difference to resale.

Just going on what a couple of dealers advised.

But I agree, your right it's  bugger all difference and is it's about the same as the VAT increase. So either way works out about the same in terms of value \ savings etc
Guess it comes down (asuming the car is a late Jan \ eairly Feb delivery) want the car ASAP or wait a few weeks for the new reg.

Each to their own, for me I've elected for a March 1st delivery with the new reg, as otherwise would have had a early Feb delivery.

ah no way, whens it's build week \ due for delivery?

Up to about 2 weeks ago, dealers were running into real problems with slots running out. Build weeks are now into next year.
Told that I'd be guarranteed March 1st due to such an early order. I guess gives the dealer time to swap build weeks about for people who what their car sooner. I'm happy for them to delay the build week as long as I get the on 1st March (i.e so the car isn't sitting about at the dealer for ages, plus would get any last minuite changes etc).

Struggeling with the ACC option still not sure to get it or not.

If you intend to keep it for more than 3 years then there will be next to no difference and you might as well get it asap.

That said, a "GT10 XXX" number plate would be pretty slinky tho!  i.e. since you can't get a personal number plate to make your car look newer  (p.s. that number plate is available for £390)

The way things are going I wouldn't be that surprised if the OPs GTI didn't arrive until nearly March anyway. I think I'd wait the couple of weeks personally for the newer plate. No point in buying a new car and having it look like a second hand one two weeks later!

I cannot believe the patience of you people waiting four months plus for a new car to arrive. I'd be petrified that someone would release something shinier and better in the meantime and I wouldn't be able to change my mind! I guess it gives you chance to save a few more pennies for the car but I really just couldn't be that patient. That's why I bought a hammered ex-demo!

Me too... although it seems unlikely that it will arrive before March 1st.
The only downer is the VAT thing.  2.5% of £33k is about £825 - so if it was registered before the 28th Feb I'd save a bit.
I did manage to get the dealer to agree to paying half the VAT if it comes after 28th Feb.  To be honest, I'd rather pay the £412 and register it as a 10 plate - as then it feels like a new car for another 6 months
