Title: rough starting.
Post by: alfie FISH on 06 November 2009, 01:05
Can anyone help or offer some advice.
I have a mrk 4 gt tdi and when its been stood over night and i start it first thing it is really rough and some times lacks power, and is fine every time i start it after.

I have had the car checked and the garage said there was no faults with maf etc and they changed a temp sensor but the problem is still
there.

Just if anyone can help.

Cheers
Dan

how do,

You've changed the plugs right?  If they are fairly new (or you have tested them working) then have a look at your glow plug relay....

what plugs are you on about? Diesels don't have spark plugs.

How long does the glow plug lamp stay on for when your first turn the ignition on?

you mentioned plugs but weren't specific to what plugs you meant and the way you wrote you post implied that they were changed recently and its very seldom you have to change glow plugs on a diesel car

I was just pointing out to the OP not to look for something that don't exist on his car

And surely you could come up with a better insult then muppet

Okay then, thought it might be made clear by the mention of 'glow plug relay' afterwards?

Okay muppet was a bit poor, i'll stick to sheep seeking taff from now on ;)

It is indeed a terrible thing! However,  I'll stick to the genuine leisure centres......

Enough with the arguments now anyway, we're here to help the guy, besides, i don't even own a mk4 :p

Where's the fun in going to a leisure centre?  :undecided:  Half the fun is chasing them around the hills

Get the battery / alternator checked out too just in case its low and needs changing

Also check all your hoses for splits / cracks etc

does the car lose any coolant / oil etc?

When you say it's rough in the morning, what do you mean by rough exactly?
Mine when first started in the morning, sort of judders in bursts of about 5-8 seconds when cold, and I can hear a very feint knocking noise when it's juddering.
Is it something like this? If so then I gots meself a problem aswell :(

sounds about normal then I'd say.  How long has it been like this out of interest?

To be honest i've been hoping it is normal.
It's been like this since i've had the car about 3 months or so.

I had the same sort of car before this for about a month and that was also sort of like this, so i'm hoping it's a characteristic thing as the vw technicians always say lol.

start to worry when the noise doesn't go away when the car is up to temperature lol

Ok cool, I was thinking I was just unlucky to have the noise in both cars.

So these dervs can make all sorts of noises but just as long as they go away when the engine is upto temp things are probably ok then?

Ususually yeah.  Mine makes a whole world of strange noises; I've started to ignore them  :lipsrsealed:

Right i'm gonna do the same, if the noise persists when the car is upto temp then i'm gonna get it looked into from now on.

I think I stress myself out too much with noises on the car.

RE noise stops when you dip the clutch = thrust bearing, no big deal :)

MK3TDI1996 cheers for that info mate, it doesn't have a knock on effect does it, like if I don't get it changed.

Expensive to get replaced? I bet if it's near the clutch it'd cost a bomb in labour.

its just gets progressively noisier I believe

And yes if you do change it you just as well replace the flywheel / clutch whilst you're there as it will cost roughly the same in labour

The part itself is only £40 or so from the dealers

If me or my brother knew this at the time when the flywheel and clutch got replaced it would've been really handy, never mind if it doesn't have a knock on efect and not a big problem i'll just leave it.

It's not the type of thing that if I don't get it fixed it'll fook my flywheel or clutch up will it?

In my own experience, a noisy thrust bearing has never been more of a problem than the irritating noise it makes.  I've only ever replaced one flywheel and it was a G60 one to replace my standard 1.9tdi wheel.  Not that i'm questioning anyone else's experience with them of course!

Replacing the thrust bearing is a pretty easy job to do yourself if it's bothering you that much.  I'd just wait till your clutch gives up though :) - seeing as you seem to have done it quite recently, that could be a while :p
