Can anyone help me my gf's gti 8v as failed its emisson's.
I had a code reader on it and it came up with the lambda sensor with did reduce a bit but still wont pass.
The exhaust as been checked for leaks and all ok , but it as got the guy in the garage puzzled.
When running the car stutter's when driving.
As anyone got any idea's what the problem may be ????????
-
Did you actually replace the lambda sensor? The bit you wrote after that doesnt really make sense :undecided:
-
Sorry your write, i was rushing a bit
Yeah i had a new one put in which did reduce it, i think to pass on lambda it has to be 1.30 mine at first was 1.76 but it's now down to 1.50.

If engine running rough on tickover then check all breather pipes! Thats what my problem was!
Thats oil breathers and vacuum hoses.
-
The bloke in the garage, did by pass an oil pipe because it looked week but made no differance and he checked the vac pipe's
He was telling me he think's it maybe an air leak somewhere.
I just thought someone may have an idea before it cost's me a load of money at a garage.

Tends to run rich if the maf is faulty.
-
have ya checked the oil breather rubber bung - cant remember the real name, lol,
see if that has split
(the one under the black breather box on the cam cover)
mine had split and ran like a dog!!
worth a though :)
otherwise i agree with above vac pipes etc...
-
Just to update i had a bit of a play around to see if i could find a split pipe.
No joy but i unplugged my maf sensor and the car did'nt stall, i thought thats funny the car should stall.
I took it for a test drive and she run's sweet as a nut
In tomoz to see if the emisson's is sorted.
Somebody work that out.

i had this when i had my scooby, take it for a run and thrash the sh.t out of it, get it nice and hot and put it back thro,
i no its not a subaru but you will be surprised how much crap that will burn out, all scooby owners do this and it does bring the emissons down a bit, sometimes enough to pass
-
Yeah i will do that, its just before i could'nt because it was holding back too much and i was scared of poping something, but now that i have removed the maf plug it runs sweet.
I dont understand how it can run with that not plugged in, unless somebody came up with a great idea and has by passed the flow meter ???????????????
-
that means yours is chuffed buddy!
its running good now cos the ecu isnt getting wrong signals form it!
its prob overfueling/underfueling now but at least it works!
get a new one and i bet your emissions come down!
ps - well expensive new - try and get a 2nd hand one!
thats what i did - job done!
-
Do you think the emisson's will be high because am hoping to get the mot sorted then get another one.
But what gets me is that it did'nt show up as an error when i had it plugged in so if it was giving bad signal's then it should have shown up on the reader should'nt it?????????????
-
Whats got me thinking with this is the cat is working ok then whether its over fueling then the cat should still sort it. If its failing the lambda test on the CO machine this usually points to a leak somewhere in the exhaust.
If your car passes an mot with a CO% of 0.25 with the cat fitted and its running spot on then with the cat removed it should only be around 0.75%. It would have to be seriously over fuelling for the cat and lambda to not manage it. Then it would smoke like a chimney.
I would run it low on fuel, add some cat guard to the fuel then give it a damn good leathering. 70mph in fourth down the mway for 20mins or so.
-
The garage checked for leakage on the exhaust with so set around the gasket's and it never drew anything in.
He did tell me that the car was way overfueling on idle, and it's drinking it way more than my vr6.
Am just hoping it passes tomoz without the maf sensor plugged in , then at least it's got an mot then i can sort out buying another flow meter from somewhere.

I already did. If thhe maf is not working then of course it will not run worse when you disconnect it. Try cleaning it, if not replace it. I ran around for ages with my maf disconnected cause it was broke, went like stink but wouldn't tick over and drank gallons of juice.
