Parking sensors, parking camera, park assist, reverse activated kerb view parking mirror. Is this overkill in a compact hatchback with small overhangs? Especially when the person in the old Volvo you've carefully squeezed in front of takes half your paintwork with them on their way home...
A question for those who already have their GTI's - can you over-ride the kerb view mirror on the lux pack? I'm not sure I want my mirror to point down every time I reverse.

Yeah, you don't have the knob turned to L.
It does it automatically in this position but acts like any other wing mirror outside this position.

Parking sensors are an overkill and can be a little irritating getting in and out of the garage (okay, yes there is an off button I know, still...) but I chose them because my wife just recently passed her test. Yes, that's reason enough.

FFS...
If you've hit the wall you've went too far...

I used to think parking sensors were a waste of money as I can park without any problems.
One day I went out to the car (about 2 years ago) and it was really frosty. I got in the car and turned on the heater etc, and scraped the frost off the car widows. I didn't bother with the rear one, as I thought the heated rear would take car of it.
Little did I know, that in the 30 seconds I got in the car and put my seatbelt on etc, a van had come into my car park and parked pretty close behind me.
I revered out, and CRUNCH - reversed straight into him. It wasn't fast, but it was still enough to smash my bumper - and his!
There was a shortage of Editon 30 bumpers at the time, so I had to drive about for 5 weeks with a smashed bumper. I claimed through my insurance and it cost over £1200 for his bumper and mine.
I ordered a new car on Saturday - £400 for parking sensors. They would have saved me a LOT of hassle, a big excess, and some embarassment! Now it seems like an obvious choice!!

Would have cost more with £400 worth of parking sensors in it... just kidding.
I have managed into reverse into a post before (Passat Estate) even WITH parking sensors fitted :embarassed: so can appreciate the value of them on a larger car. It just seems like there's a huge number of parking aids available.
Trying to choose between having the lux pac for its folding mirrors or the reverse camera. Decisions, decisions.
-
It's actually kinda hard when the left mirror goes down when you're parking on the drivers side.
I always seem to unwind too early.
Perhaps I'm sub-consciously really worried about kerbing the monza shadows!
Ps re posts, walls and vans the reversing camera is awesome!

Get a rear view camera. Even if you can park and it#s not frosted up, it's a cool geeky toy for bugger all cash

Specced it!
Its just a shame I was forced to take an RCD510 - even though I was going to fit my RNS510! I needed the RCD510 to be able to spec Dynaudio anyway - so its not too bad. I'll get £250-300 back for it on ebay!

I hear this is why they made the 'big bumper' mk2, simply use the bumpers as parking sensors
-
Real drivers dont need parking aids... wonder how ppl parked in the 80s or before that...

They never had Power Steering, ABS, Traction Control, Airbags, Sat Nav etc either... but as time moves on cars get safer and better specced. Why not move with the times?!
-
Like for like, cars in the 80s were smaller, had better visability, cheaper, higher profile tyres and had fat rubber bumpers.

I am with the times and I am not saying dont get parking sensors, I just said real drivers dont need aids... focussing only on parking aids...
-
I never got the parking sensors but went for the camera instead.
Wouldn't be without it now. Certainly not just a gimmick.
-
he he he in the 80s, I didnt mind rubbing my bumpers coz its black and made from tough plastic materials that after a wash and applying some bumper juice, it will look brand new. These days a pedestrian walks by and accidentaly grazes your bumper and there are scratches already. Paint today are supposedly environmentally better as they are softer. But I dont understand this bit, if it is soft and all, when its damaged, we as owners will want to touch it up... therefore it will involve workshops who in turn will need electricity, water, more pain, time etc... would that not cause more harm to the environment?

Chrome plated steel bumpers FTW!

I dont think the camera is a gimmick... depends on how you would use it though... he he he You can use it to check whether spies are planting a bomb in the rear end of your car... ha ha ha...

Amen to that... bullet proof too... ha ha ha or worst case scenario, just change it...

That's what I thought about the DSG, but somehow it's not a Real CarTM if it's got that.... :smug:
Rolfe.
