When the car is cold and i start it the car loses at leawst 50% of its power - its the agn non turbo - but for about 10 minutes there is a constant fluctuation of power its like driving a tractor (BTW its not a diesel!!) - it seems once the oil is warmed it stops - when you put the right foot on the pedal it sounds like del boys three wheeler! - bad i know.. but its true!
-
you shouldnt be putting power down when the car is cold anyway!

Any fault codes?
Faulty temp sender? MAF? :undecided:
-
I dont put my foot down when this happens - it judders in all gears and at all speeds, it didnt do this a week ago -i am fairly careful when it comes to warming up and cooling down - I bought a brand new air mass meter (MAF) from Vw a month ago so it cant be that - havent got vagcom but will put it on this week.

does it make the car shake? like a misfiring kind of judder? at idle too?

Get a cheap ebay lead if you have a laptop or cheap code reader

mine does this, its the thing thats supposed to go in the airbox, cant remember what its called, have you got a cone filter?
-
Anecdote for "Air Filter"?!? - Yes I have one -its standard... but i have had to change the whole air filter box recently, again about a month ago. the old one had holes in it that the previous owner believed would increase the air flow, ok it might have but it fooked up the MAF sensor, so i had them both replaced. I will get a pipercross/k&n panel filter but not sure which one. What should/could I do?
-
i would go with the pipercross panel filter tbh flows 30% more air than oem in regard to replacing your fooked airbox the fact that it had holes drilled would not fook your maf as the incoming air albeit through the intake pipe and some through the holes has to all pass through the airfilter anyway so is irrelevant that it should get to much air to fook the maf sensor the idea of the maf sensor is to tell the ecu/management how much incoming air is going through your maf and the sensor will adjust this accordingly

all of this is good and will improve your car but probably wont solve your problem, it might even be the coil packs at fault?
-
i know very little about coilpacks - where are they and what are they for - Also a very long time ago on this forum i read that Motorworld in Oxford do free coilpack changes because they had recalled in the mk4 for their crap coilpacks...? Not 100% if it was a recall but definitely remember them doing it for nowt.
-
The coil packs are the same as HTleads normaly found on older cars, its the lead that conects onto your spark plug, so if one has failed it will cause the car to only run on 3 cylinders.
best to get a digonistics to see if these are at fault.
-
How expensive is it to replace and can i do it myself?
Your right if the car is running on 3 cylinders then thats bad.. my only objection to that diagnosis is that the car runs fine after about 5-10 minutes and its only when started i have this judder problem, but then again it could be an existing problem because the idle at start is higher than normal then it flats out but is not steady - will have to see what codes come up at my mates garage.
