I bought an 8v GTI on an N plate, and whenever I operate the central locking via the key fob or door looks, I get a loud whirring from the filler cap area.
It's almost as if there is a locking mechanism there which is not able to engage or disengage properly and it continues on for about 15 seconds.
The odd thing is that I cannot see any original or after market mechanism of locking the filler cap, so a bit puzzled as to what is happening.
Also, from time to time, and now, the central locking actually doesn't work - it does engage, or try to, and the lock pins inside move as if they are trying to go up or down but nothing happens. Do the pressurised canisters that power these locks ever run out or am I looking at a mechanical fault? Not sure if it's stock or after market system but I have a small tank of something above the sills, inside on the drivers side.
Thanks for any insight guys!

Not sure if this is your solution but I recently changed the rear door on mine. After refitting I could hear a hiss of air for about 20 seconds and the locks would not work. I had to change the air line to the central locking as the connector had broke on the old one. Check yours to see if it is air controlled. Hope this helps Cheers Deano

Golfs have a vacum controlled cental locking, the noise that you can hear is the vaucum pump and it is located in the boot inside the polystyrene protector.
It sounds like the system is either loosing pressue or the pump isnt working propely, if its loosing pressure its proberly on the filler cap lock if it isnt engaging/dis-engauging

Mine does it. It used to whirr like buggery for a good 30 secs when the pump in the door was leaking. Mine must make noise for about a second.

Don't think i have this exact issue but if i can ask..
When i open my drivers door, sometimes i get a hissing whiring noise coming from under lower dash roughly where the relays are located, the noise lasts for about 20 secs but if you close the door it stops.. No probs with door locking/unlocking and no issues going on anywhere else.. 8v btw
Any ideas?
Thanks
Christo

Be sure it's coming from the lower dash and not the door.

mine done the same earlier on this year it split behind the boot where the wires go into the door, i put a screw in it to stop it from hissing then brought the line from a scrapyard

Thanks..yes would make sense wouldn't it..but have listened carefully several times and it's under the lower dash certain of that..

if you take the side strips near the seat off you can follow the line (green) to where it is leaking.
