At the moment my mk3 has 17inch TT comps, which to be honest, make the car handle like a bag of poo, i think 17's are too big for a mk3.
Im thinking about with new engine, having the comps as winter wheels, and maybe something shiny, but also a set of wheels with R888 tyres or similar, in a size that makes the car drivable in a track/drag/fast road use.
What sort of wheels do you think would be best? 15? 16? Width? 6.5? 7? 7.5?
Im after getting traction in the dry/track and also getting more handling by not having tractor wheels (17's)
Any suggestions?

I would run 15" with a 6 1/2 width.

Go for a standard size set up you think then?
Would it not be wiser to go a bit wider for traction? And rubber on the ground.

It is an option but 195/50/15's will be a good all round setup.

16 x 7j would be my choice

7" x 16" are the best I've used...from 15s up to 17s in various widths.
215/40/16 is a good size tyre too (Anniversary size)
Great for the road...but you won't find dedicated trackday tyres in 215/40/16, sadly.
16s are the best I've found for weight, steering feel and gearing etc...and you can get the 312mm brakes under them.

As big and wide as possible I say!
17x8's with 215/40 tyres!
I do have a set of 17x 7.5 with those tyres on! (the 17x8's are being refurbed)

I say 16x8 Mike!

Not really, you get too much bumpsteer and tram lining with mahoosive wheels. 15's or 16's are best.

I would agree, i currently have 17's on it handles like a pig.
I think i will try 16's with raising the coilovers a bit, maybe 7 wide.
