Title: Eco-tek
Post by: AdamB on 23 July 2003, 12:40
Has anyone any experience with these little gadgets and are they worth installing? I know all the press reports rate it, but I have never spoke to anyone who has installed one.
Let me know your opinions- especially on an 8v engine.

had one on a calibra 16v and it was pants.  no noticable gains in performance and did not see any improvements in fuel economy.

Ecotek did honour there no qubble money back guarantee so it might be worth giving it ago on the golf

Regards
Shaun

Adam if you fit one let us know how you get on with it, I was thinking it might be worth a go.

Is this the device that lets air into the manifold under decel, if it is I cant see how on a modern engine how it can improve fuel economy(fuel cutoff on overrun)
Snip

"A limited airflow originates via the device and is directed along a connecting pipe via the device into the inlet manifold. As this secondary air source combines with the air drawn through the conventional air intake turbulence is created which further combines with dispersed fuel droplets that have been injected by the EFI system or drawn out of the carburettor."

Why not just pull off a small vacuum pipe? Thas device should be interesting on closed loop systems with adaptive ECUs. My 2p worth.                                         Just the views of a mad VW fan ;D, Steve.

Suddenly it all sounds technical and complicated - I'm scared now, so I'm going to leave it until someone shows me it does work :-\

right, well i had one of those eko-tek things on my 1.3 mk2 and after maybe a month i was getting more miles out of the tank better low end response and emissions for mot were much lower. i even had better mpg even tho i ran a straight through from 1st box to gti rear box, and a bloke at work got one on mk3 driver and says pick up much better and more mpg on longer distance drives. if thats any help.

Previous owner had one of these on my Mk3 8v. He had removed it before he sold the car at 50k cause he was worried the noise it makes would put people off the car. At least this is what he tells me. However this bloke had bolted (badly) a ?250 Magnex box on an old VW system with a 1" hole in it!

When i got the car (50) the throttle body was quite clogged up. I got it all cleaned out and the car was as good as new. I know this does happen on these cars but i can't help wondering if the Eco-tek played a part. It is certainly food for thought as it mentions no where on the eco-tek website the affects these things have on engine life. Can you really
get something for nothing? Maybe VW got it right when they decided not to include this device in their new cars eventhough they now know the technology?

That said, you can now get a filter silencer for the device! i may give it a try a some point when i get bored  but i think i will always worry that it may be sucking dirty air into the throttle body.

These little things are supposed to have a gauze inside them so in theory you shouldn't be able to suck any debris into your engine through them, the little filter they sell is mainly to stop the whistling noise that you get from having one of these fitted. I've seen them and was thinking of trying one but I am not yet convinced.

Sounds interesting, but like a lot of these things does it really do enough to be worth the money?
