Title: Would you swap?
Post by: th3_f15t on 31 October 2009, 10:19
Right, I currently have a GTi 8 valve. It's in good condition, and I've spent a fair bit on it, including a new M.O.T. Currently thinking of selling it though, but not sure.

Now a good reason for me to sell it is that a mate has told me I can buy his GTi 16v, but this car has been offroad for a year and a half in dry store, no tax or M.O.T. on it and it's 2 years older than my current Golf.

Sell the 8 valve and buy the 16 valve model? Or Keep the 8 valve and do the 2.0 litre bottom end job? What to do... Help!

it depends on what needs doing to yours/his i suppose. you need to weigh up the costs and make a decision based on that! whats the shell like on both cars?

Factor in "Better the devil you know" in to your equations

Both cars are pretty much the same, but haven't seen the 16 valve in a few years. The only thing swaying me is the fact he's selling it to me at a really low price... A 16 valve costs a lot more these days.

Last I saw of it, it was in good condition, and my 8 valve is in very good condition too.

Can you afford to buy it without selling yours? If so, do that and make up your mind as you get the car ready to being on the road. Once you start working on it, you will have a pretty good idea on how sound the car is and thus have more of an idea on which way you want to go. You then have the choice of which car to sell.
If you can't do that, then I would say stick with what you know until a known quantity valver comes along if that is what you really want.

Hm, bery good point there, but sadly I can't afford to buy it now and sell later.

The other main point to factor in here is that whichever car I end up with, both will be under going engine rebuild, gearbox overhaul and some suspension tweaks.

In favour of the 8 valve, I know it to be working and alright bodywork.

In favour of the 16 valve, it's already off road but I've seen it working before and it's in pretty good shape.

Argh! Brain hurting...

Much better bet, the 16v being sat for over a year could need loads doing.

8v with a 2.0 bottom end will have more torque than a 16V

Sorry but it is a no brainer to me you have a 8 valve in good condition, mot'd etc yet the 16v has been off the road for over a year and it is 2 years older plus no mot, yes it has been dry stored but being sat for that length of time could and will lead to lots of work.

So yes I would keep the 8v and 2.0 it.

whats gonna have gone wrong though? if anything the bushes will need changing, not a lot of work to get a better car. they will need doing on the 8v at some point anyway

you never know he might jump in the 16v and it drive perfectly. what would you do then wayne?

Seems to me like you are after a new challenge! Your 8v drives well? your happy with it? etc so its now boring cus its finished. 16v is a new project and its cheap. If the 8v is your second car or you could live without a set of wheels for a bit. i would buy the 16v!

it's all about the 16v.   put a 2ltr bottom end on it and it chould tow a bigger caravan than the 2.0 8v if thats what you want ( slappage scheme will be inplimented tho )
