Is ACC worth spending £700 odd pounds? Will you feel the difference for normal about town drives?
I was told by my dealer that not many people are ordering their GTI's with ACC.
Also told that about town, there's not really much difference and it's really aimed at long distance motorway (however I've found my Mk5 GTI and it's cloth seats to be fantastic at anyway!).
However reviews always seem to include ACC in their comments.
So struggeling to see if it's work the £700 and or if it's a key option for resale later. You could spend a similar amount on other toys with cash left such as a RCD510 (with the sound pack, or without the sound pack and a camera) or a sunroof (as it's dark in the back with the new tinted glass). Hmmmm....:undecided:

I think you should have tried the search

Seriously though, there is quite a bit of info if you have a quick look.
Seems to be very subjective.

I got ACC because the car is required to transport my mother, who is 93. As I said at the time, £700-odd to stop that annoying repetitive noise from the passenger seat - "oh, those bumps!"
I drive myself in normal, and I'm not convinced I'd bother if I was buying just for myself. I might change my mind as I use the car more though.

If you can afford it, spec it.

If all you're going to do is drive it around town, is it worth spending £23K+ on the GTI?
-
oh yes it's worth every penny spending £24k+ on a very cool and very nice shopping trolly.
Mr. Clarkeson said something very true about the GTI (mkV) along the lines of drop the kids off at school and then if you wish drive home like you've been stung like a wasp.
He was bang on! Our Mk5 has been fantastic including about town during the week for short commutes, but then come weekends or days out in wales on some lovely roads it's outstanding.
Does everything brilliantly! I've just looked at an S3 (interior is horrid!) \ S4 \ 335i \ M3 \ 550i \ CLS \ even a Q5 sline petrol turbo (same engine as GTI), but have ended up going with Golf GTI again, but got to say the M3 V8 saloon was a dam nice car, but they all didn't put a smile on my face like the GTI does.
It's like having a Q5-ish practicallity coupled with the fun of a R8 all wrapped into a fairly economical hatch back.
Only gotcha is I'm a little tightfisted, so I looked at ACC and thought hmmm is it worth it, can I tell the difference? is it a must have button that will affect the car's resaleability in the future? I've gone with out AAC, my thinking is that the Mk5 set up for me was just the right ballance for sporty \ comfy about town or motorway (thanks to the excellent seats I think also!)

Jellycat - I hear you, but come on... a golf gti instead of the M3 saloon? really? i can't believe that....
-
Yep, I looked at the M3 and thought wow, I want one! The V8 sounded fantastic when it was reversed out of it's spot at the dealers. Problem was M3 just felt, too ostentatious. Don't laugh but I wanted to duck down everytime I stopped at the lights as every car that pulled up against it kept looking over, felt like I was in a goldfish bowel. The 335i was more descreet and felt just as quick off the mark, but lost that magic sparkle of the M3 V8. Tricky you want something brilliant fun and comfy that's doesn't draw too much attention. Can't get past loving the GTI.
-
I caught the familiar glimpse of a set of 18 inch monzas today about town. looked very smart on a MkV... but somehow didn't look too flash at all. Golfs don't attract much attention and I think the MKVI is similar. (though I would bet that candy white is a head turner!)
I'd swap my GTI for an M3 saloon though!

We tried the baby seat in a white 5 door GTI, did look very nice. However I've noticed the thread in this forum about problems with white paint jobs. That was a major surprise when you think about VW's reputation about quality etc etc.
Also you can’t load up a 3 series with baby stuff when going on hols in UK like you can with a Golf such as dropping the split seats \ take out the parcel shelf etc. Should point out that you can order the split seats for the 3 series as an option, but still doesn’t work out as easy to load up with stuff due to the boot opening etc as it’s a saloon (again just my thoughts only).
Then it comes down to practicality – Q5 or a bigger car again great! But you loose the fun factor of a hot hatch, and you can’t taken them both on holiday unless get the wife to drive the Q5 with the kids (which sounds surprisingly a tempting idea, thank god she wouldn’t read this!).
Didn’t even look at an RS or an ST as you need have a burberry cap on backwards or something when driving what to me seems to be a car equivalent of a Shellsuit. Sorry to offend anyone with a focus. The RS is an excellent hot hatch back, but it just looks like something you’d buy from JJB sports or Halfords, which is the exact opposite of the Golf.

Dont think by one guys bad experience that all Vw Candy White paint jobs are bad. Mine in 3dr doesnt have as much as a mark anywhere. And yes it turns alot of heads and attracts lots of chavy wasps all over my back bumper.
However as a warning dont bother with White unless ur prepared to clean it everytime you use it. Mine gets filthy very quickly. The local Kosovans make a killing out of me

shock horror!! you're not cleaning it yourself? your pristine paintwork aint gonna be pristine for much longer!
e.g. the tyre dressing they use is prob gonna stain your paintwork. that spray they use to loosen dirt is mega strong and will affect the wax/ polish on your car... best to DIY...
-
Only had a couple of spots on my white car, now totally gone and not a mark on it.
White does get dirty quick, but with white it doesnt really show it up if you know what I mean.
-
Do look great in candy white. But I went for solid black (nice with a good shine). The colour poll has interesting results. I almost went for the blue
-
Solid and not the metallic?
Do you notice much difference?

You must be bonkers taking it to them! the reason it looks so nice and clean when they've done it is cos the acid they use strips a layer of laquer off every time!!!!!!!
-
Ouch! sounds a nasty cleaning process!
Re the solid black, yes can tell the difference (well I could anyway) I bought my current mk5 in Black also for same reason, I clean mine myself, AutoGlym gives a top shine and if you put in the effort you get a fantastic deep gloss with the solid paint (sounding like a detailer now!), having said that a few times last winter took it to one of them imo washes when it was too cold (plus thinking of ice on the pathway next moring from washing day before ouch!).
This time I almost went for the white or the Blue, but then saw a black 5 door with 18 inch monza's and went wow, want one!

So you'd recommend the solid over the metallic? Strange... not many would, but ETTO :)
-
Don't think you can recomend colours, as you say it's a case of each to their own. I don't like the GTI in Red but know it's very popular.
Metallic \ pearl is very nice, especially on the Blue (looks fantastic on Mk5 R32), but my own preference is for solid black over metallic black but does take more work to keep clean and has to be polished much like the white I guess. As you say ETTO.

Well, I'll think at this point I'll still go with non-ACC might, but may ask the dealer can find a demo car with AAC on to compare the two as still got a little time to change as order is for 1st March.
Interesting is the dealer says not many people have ordered it, but said sunroofs are popular (think that is because it's a little dark in the back with the tinted rear windows on the GTI. The tint is perfect for the little one so we can get rid of them naff stick on window binds from mothercare, the tint also also looks good too (nice work VW!).

I took ACC... but its one of these things I'll probably play with for a week, and then never use again!
Having said that - its something I'd probably do without for a week and then wish I'd got it!
With 19" Rims and 25mm lower suspension, I imagine the ride in the R will be pretty stiff - so the option to press 'comfort' might be quite useful on some of the horrible roads around here!
I'd rather pay for it now and never use it that wish I'd fitted it. Its something that could never be retrofitted.
-
I think ACC is worth it for factors:
1, Its does take the edge off in comfort mode around town. Living in London potholes are common and speed bumps are everywhere. Hence in town I drive in comfort all the time.
2, In sport the steering firms up nicely.
3, Normal gives dynamic adjustability. It is the non-ACC setting most of the time, but when the car senses you're pushing on, it'll put itself into sports setting automatically.
4, It'll be worthwhile if I ever do any trackdays or when going for a decent "spirited" drive.
5, Just makes you feel good to have an element of "user tuning", even if the difference is slight. Much like the multi-chassis modes in an M5 or Evo. Its a cool gadget for pub talk with your mates as it sets the car apart from lesser brethren!
-
Hmmm, I'm sorting out if I can get an ACC and a non-ACC test drive in order to assertain the differences, then also see what will happen to the build week if I go for it.
It's to comfort setting which is the appealing one, but the normal setting sounds great (i.e adjusts automatically when needed).
Doubt I'd use the sport as not going to use it for track days. Don't shout but the GTI on order will mostly will used my the other half for local commutes about town (and she's not bothered), appart from when we take it for weekends away in the lakes \ wales where there's lovely roads!).

These are the two reasons I'm specifying it.

This is funny. I'm trading down from an M3 coupe to an R for the same reason. I want something quick but less ostentatious. I like the everyman everyday image of the Golf very much. But I also like to blitz it on European B roads when I go to spend time with my wife's parents in Italy. You can only do that in winter when you have a car with AWD. Add the Golf's practicality and economy and giving away a 8/10ths of a second 0-60 mph is the only real downside. Actually, it is a bit disappointing not having a V8, but 14-18 mpg when you put the hammer down, anti-social emissions and horrible i-Drive tip the scales in VW's favour. In the final analysis, the R is sodding expensive for a Golf, but given that a properly specced M3 is nudging £55K, £32K doesn't look too bad.
Having test driven both ACC and non-ACC Golfs, ACC is definitely the way to go. It is simply a much better ride.

I agree with Tailpipe, know what you mean regarding the M3, the new current model is an outstanding car that sounds fantastic, but Golf is fun, not bad value, and discreet. Best of all you don't have to put up with BMW dealers (I hate their sales people, each time I've gone to look at a BMW, I've found them to be rude obnoxious and up their own backsides, I've owned one in the past and never again unless I get someone to sort out getting the car services for me so I don't have to deal with them. Sorry if I sound condesending but I can't understand their sales people when you get a far better and more down to earth service at other dealers, even ones covering way more exotic brands!
