Title: Mk3 GTi problems??
Post by: lmcmullen on 23 July 2003, 09:51
Hi

Im looking to buy a mk3 GTi.

I dont want to waste my money so what should  I be looking out for on a 1996 P plate (around 60000 miles) which will indicate that there are problems with the car?

Also, has anyone had any problems with the catalytic converter on their mk3 GTi???

Cheers, Lee.

Bear in mind they should have a cambelt at 6ok, check history if it has it. Other than that they are rock solid.

Make sure all the electrics are in working order.

Also make sure its not rough running - if so could be throttle valve control.

No personal problems with the CAT. Have you heard they are an issue?

Make sure the lights behind the heater controls are working (sometimes can be very dim or not working at all).

at 60 000 miles the engine and mechanicals should be almost as good as new if the car has been treated with care. my mk3 had a non functioning electric window and the central locking pump was humming badly so check those.
