In case you hadn't noticed, VW has recently increased Golf prices by about 1%-2%. Not much, but in a time of such economic strife, you'd have thought they might have reduced them.
Don't worry because help is on the way in the form of next year's new Mercedes-Benz A-Class. According to German car mag "Auto Motor und Sport" this ditches the current model's bread van box-like shape and adopts a more svelte Golfesque configuration. The styling will be much edgier and it will be loaded with new technology. Recent German reports indicate that real effort is being made to engineer it and build it to the highest standards in the class. It will be chasing the buyer who thinks that VWs are just a bit too common and a bit too expensive.
I know I shouldn't be mentioning a Mercedes on a VW site and I have no idea whether the new Merc will match the Golf with this latest model, but the new A-Class has got Wolfsburg sufficiently worried to have advanced development of the Golf Mk 7 by 18 months. In the meantime, Golf prices should soften a bit. let's hope so.

Errr... if the MK7 is currently projected for a late 2011 release as everyone seems to be saying, taking the MK7 forward 18 months would make it available in about 6 months time?
In that case, by the time the Golf R actually arrives in dealers etc in Jan / Feb 2010 - it will be out of date before they actually sell any!!!
We could spend our lives waiting for a new model. Every time VW release a new Golf / Passat / Polo etc, there are rumours straight away about the next model coming along in XX months / years! I've already been waiting the guts of 7 months for a Golf R - so I certainly won't be holding off another year for an A-class!

I have been banging on at a mate of mine who has recently taken delivery of a 09 C220cdi sport that his car is like a vectra inside and the quality is not as good as he thinks. He seems to think that its better than the golf... although at £32k+ so it should be.
... anyway it went in to the dealers a couple of days ago to have a new steering rack, he went and picked it up today. As he collected the door handle fell off

Most European car makers have increased prices over the last few months - including Mercedes.

Think I'll stick with the Golf... :smug:

I'd say the B-class is the direct competitor to the Golf (not the A-class):

Again - sticking with the Golf.

Not me... more power yes. Made out of crap plastics and looks cheapo inside. External styling is awful imo (and i quite liked the old megane)

Nope. Hardly understated and 3 door only. Oh, and no 4WD. Keep 'em coming...

^^ now that is ugly and French so it is bound to break down every 5 mins

My old bass has a C-class. After having a ride in it, all I can say is I was disappointed. A lot. If you want a decent Merc, it has to be a properly expensive one. SLS AMG Gullwing for me...

Last time I looked it was a 2012 unveiling and not on UK roads until 2013.

The later the better if you ask me - but there were some magazines said late 2011.
Yup, when I see the full pic it looks exactly like a C2. I thought the A-Class was intended as a 5 door small family car?

This thread is complete tosh

I had a brief flirtation with MB and I agree previous posts; their quality, finish and all round presence is not what the brand would make you think.
Stick to VW guys!
