Title: are there any dealers out there offering any discounts for the GTI??
Post by: daviescotland on 27 October 2009, 14:29
Hello.... I had posted this in the mkivs forum and was directed over here, must say there loads of information on here.

I am in the market for a new Golf GTI but would probably have a trade in, i would be looking for a march 2010 onwards delivery (new plate). So far dealers have been a bit slow to mention any discounts. Even 5% would be a start.

Was thinking about the broker route, but as i have a trade in, i'm not sure if i can be bothered selling my car privately.

Any suggestions welcome. I am from Central Scotland but am willing to travel to pick the car up.

Hello
It's been a while since I was looking for a good deal but right now I don't think you would get any discounts at all. Dealers are fully booked with this year's orders they will try to meet well into the new year. I don't see why would they want to share their profit with you...

BTW - you could probably be better off selling privately w/o discount then the other way round... Well, in 5 out of 6 cases anyway.

Check with broadspeed, they will give you around 10% and I'm sure their waiting list for the dealers they use is up till around march 2010, give them a call.

Try Brokers4Cars as well, they offer about 10% discount.

That was my thinking also. I'll have a look around and take it from there.

I got mine from Verve at Bogside (near Wishaw) and I got a very good discount.  You could give it a try anyway.  The salesman whom I dealt with was Graeme Alexander.

I have no complaints at all about the service - excellent discount, and the car turned up when they said it would, 10 weeks after I placed the order.

Discount seems to be around 1k max at the moment, which is a bit of a joke. I'm not that desperate for one!

I went in clutching a set of figures from the DealDrivers web site, showing all the options I'd decided on, and what DealDrivers had been offering until that very day.  I had discovered that DealDrivers were about to remove that offer as the dealer in question had sold his quota, and I told Verve that.  I said I wasn't expecting them to match the DealDrivers quote, but I was shopping around with that as a benchmark.

They came within £500 of the DealDrivers figure.  Which was a discount of about £2000 ON TOP OF THE SCRAPPAGE DEAL.  I bit their hand off.

I think there were simply better discounts going in July, across the board.  But I also think that going in with my mind obviously made up, and obviously comparing prices and looking for a keen deal, helped a lot.

You're probably right about the timing, Rolfe.

I've said previously, it took me some doing trying to get a dealer to actually engage never mind get down to brass tacks.

That price included the scrappage, without it's only about 800 off, which is not too good.

You can still get the VAT increase picked up by VW dealers etc for cars up to end of Feb (they get back from VW or something like that).

I've found you can get about £1200 off a 5 door manual. Push harder you could get a little more (that was brokers vs dealers etc etc). Best offer I got was about £1600 off, but dodgy delivery dates made me walk.

One broker messed up and offered without the sept price rise but sadly called back and had to reduce the discount by £790 so I walked also.

Google is your friend, What car \ parkers have links off to some sites. I'd recomend calling arround and getting a batch of quotes together and then see your local dealer who may or may not match. Aim for at least £1200 min, just watch out for the VAT rise that you'll prob get hit for if you do a delivery on 1st March 2010 onwards.

Tricky part is 2009 slots are getting very full now, plus with limited production etc supply might be tight for a factory order

Makes me feel better now that I ordered in July.  With money (theoretically) saved I could buy the LED rear lights :)

Lack of discount is no bad thing. It means demand>>supply. Good for resale! Not like buying a Vauxhall VXR/ford STwhich most customer can buy what they want on the showroom. Unless you plan to drive a Vauxhall/Ford all your life, when you trade that car in for a beemer or merc, you'll be shocked!

Try http://www.autoebid.com/buy-new-cars/VOLKSWAGEN/GOLF.asp (http://www.autoebid.com/buy-new-cars/VOLKSWAGEN/GOLF.asp)

They reckon £3K off at the moment - not sure if realistic and obviously not with a trade-in.

Have bought before from them (not VW) - ended up being put through to a London dealer's fleet arm I think and around 15% discount on a Toyota.
Title: Re: are there any dealers out there offering any discounts for the GTI??
Post by: JellyCat on 30 October 2009, 21:39
Just tried the link, I spec'd up at £1,900 off a 5 door manual with options I'd selected for my GTI on order.
I got (but not from them as got via a VW dealer) a discount of about £1,600, but I've elected to wait for the march 10 reg so had to take a hit on VAT (as VW will only pay the 2.5  for orders placed by early Nov but delivery has to be before 28th Feb, thus a 59 plate).
My choice was based on a feeling that the VAT hit will off set the future price difference between a 59 and the new 10 plate (my thinkling is that 3-4 years down the line when I sell the car for whatever's out then will be a higher figure for the plate difference, than the £500 odd pounds VAT saving).

So in an answer to the question of "are there any dealers out there offering any discounts for the GTI??", the answer is yes, and also some good ones too!

Discounts are few and far between at the moment.
Demand is greater than supply so VW are making the most of it, why shouldn't they?

When demand lowers discounts will be easier and they will start giving away optional extras free.

Normal model/mk life cycle.

Yes, the illustration on the first page is obviously from a few months ago!

Good site though typically - they do a 'reverse auction' with the dealers - they fax/email out your requirements to the dealers/brokers and you get to choose between any that meet your reserve price.  I got my discount by running that site on my phone at the dealers - saved all the usual BS!  Does tend to work better when supply of the cars is greater!

Good move by mds69 pulling the sites up on his phone at the dealers!

Keep an eye on the VAT as VW only covers orders till mid Nov and delivery up to 28th Feb 2010 if I recall, if not then you'll get hit by a further £500-£600 odd pounds depending on options etc.

Ran a few sites based on a 5 door manual with some goodies added for examples:
Carfile can get you about a 4% discount off base (very nice guys, very helpful), you also end up paying and dealing direct with the dealer so no having to hand over cash to a 3rd party etc.
Bettercardeal web site was about £1,100 (check slots and VAT increase)
DealDrivers web site was about £1,200 off (check slots and VAT increase)
buyacar web site came back with only about £800 (as their original price included scrappage so take that off and drops to about £800).
autoebid.com was according to their site about £1,900 off (which did seem a little too good, but hey!)

The above is nothing more that a few quick checks I did against web sites and calling up, so it's worth spending 1/2 a day over web sites and calling them up. Then go into the dealer and be surprised as they match the price (otherwise walk away!) as most of these brokers seem to put you in touch with VW dealers anyway.

When I was doing my own calling around I found that some brokers made me a little uncomfortable by asking that you had to pay them the dosh, or which included a 3rd party contract or you getting put down as the second reg keeper (when they got hte discount via a fleet purchase). But apparently (according to their sites) lots of people have done this with no problems etc. So I guess it's down to your personal choice if you'd be happy with this type of arrangement for me personally preferred ones who then  directed you to pay and deal with the dealers (but that’s just me).

i got my car from dealdrivers and the discount is from dealing with the fleet dept, however, I am the first registered keeper.

also, the dealdrivers dont ask you for any money at all.  i just swapped a couple of emails with them and the rest i dealt with the VW dealer.

You have to watch some of these deals if you are after the scrappage.  To get the scrappage money you have to be the first registered keeper.

thanks for all the advice.

I've decided to take the plunge and have ordered a new GTI for march delivery (hopefully). Went to a main VW dealer in the end (Verve wishaw) who done me a not bad deal considering the VAT rise etc.

I've specced a few toys etc and will update this when i've got time.

Again thanks for the advice, looking forward to the delivery now.

Will do Rolfe. I dealt with one of the trainee sales guys, David Simm, and also the sales manager but didn't get his name. I'm taking the misses up for a test drive of a GTI to let her see what i've spent money on, i'll mention your name then.

Cheers again. Davie

You better mention the real one then.  Morag.

I might be back to see him, because I reckon he might have been wrong about not needing the mud flaps.  Easy retrofit though, I gather.

Anyone got something good of late?

I'm off to talk to dealer this afternoon. Best price we have is from Autoebid, but they can't place orders until next slots in Jan.

I'm hoping my small dealer may have some allocation left.

I'm after.

3dr Manual White

What do you think I should be able to get out of main dealer with Edition 30 thrown in?

I specced up a GTI whilst at the dealer to compare with the price of the R.
He said he could give me a little discount on it... I got offered £1200 off the spec I chose (identical to the R in my sig - but with 18" Monzas (which I'd sell and buy some 19" VWR's!) and xenons).
Not much, but better than a kick in the teeth.  Especially poor when I think about getting £520 off the R!

Up to about 2 weeks ago when I placed my order, the best discount I saw was £1600, then the local dealer matched it. Since them saw one broker at just over £1700. These were with no trade in.

Anybody know why the discounts are so much poorer than they were just a few months ago?

DealDrivers were offering a discount of about £2,500 on my spec, plus the £2,000 scrappage on top if you had an eligible car.  I actually took a deal with £2,000 discount on top of the £2,000 scrappage.  I thought discounts would get better as scrappage cars dried up, but apparently not.

It's to do with a good few reasons Morag. Firstly the Golf was a slow seller when it was introduced due to it's high price versus a dead market, secondly the dead market meant dealers would do deals just to shift metal and thirdly thanks to the scrappage scheme sort of artificially kicking life into the new car market and factories on reduced output owing to the aforementioned a huge waiting list has now appeared and most have sold their full allocation of GTIs.
Added to this because of the scrappage scheme there is a huge vacuum of used cars available for dealers to sell so they know they can stick any pre-reg'd stock on the forecourt and ask silly money for them as many people (self included) can't be arsed with long waiting lists.
Then there's the time honoured policy of German car importers in the UK of skillfully limiting the number of cars imported to just less than the number of orders they have calculated they will have. This keeps the new cars away from the big discounting and keeps the re-sale good which in turn generates a lot of VW part exchanges for dealers to stick on their forecourts at fairly profitable prices thus keeping a large amount of VWs under the dealership umbrella (this in turn keeps VW Finance busy too). ££££££

VW must now be in the position of needing to discount very little and still know their dealers aren't going to go the way many did this time last year.

Take the outgoing Polo model for example, normally these would be sold off fairly cheap to clear the way for the incoming model. Not so this time round from what I'm reliably told. Thanks to the scrappage scheme VW could sell almost as many Polos and Foxes at full list (obviously minus their £1000 contribution to the scrappage) as they could lay their hands on. Especially considering the Fox was a very slow seller to start with.

A friend of mine is a fleet manager and his company buy a lot of brand new cars. This time last year they almost stopped ordering new cars full stop because of the impending doom we were waiting for. This summer they have been so desperate for stock they have been buying them in from Eire as well as through proper UK channels.

Well most of the brokers I spoke to could not give an allocation until Jan 2010 and then looking at how long August orders have been you would be looking at April / May delivery, and we wanted our car in March to replace the Edition 30.

So went to our normal dealer with some quotes from Brokers, had the usual discussion about allocation and fleet buying in bulk etc. Anyhow we got just over 1k off list based on the new VAT price, and free servicing for 3 years which we settled on, so about £1800 if you add it up as a whole.

I'm quite happy on that score, and they have allocation today as its a small dealer so delivery in March.

Just go to start saving now.

Good luck with anyone else trying to get a good deal, definatly do your homework and get some figures in writing from the brokers on line, that have guaranteed allocations.

I rather thought the scrappage scheme might have made second-hand cars harder to shift.  On the basis that some people with older cars who might have been considering a used car as a replacement, decided to go for new because of the £2,000.  Of course it would take old cars out of the second-hand market, but I thought it might leave a glut of newer used models.

Also, given that there was a lot of squealing in June/July about the scrappage deal possibly ending in September or October, I rather thought most people considering going for it might have taken the plunge during July - certainly, that had a lot to do with me ordering in early July.  I'm mildly surprised there are still so many people with eligible scrappage cars who have waited till now.  Well, maybe I didn't need to move quite so fast, but I seem to have got a better deal than I'd have got if I'd waited, say for the 10 plate.

Well they lent me one for the day, whilst our Edition 30 was being serviced, pretty much same spec as I've orderded bar Winter Pack and rear view camera.

3dr Candy White
Manual
18's
RCD 510

Comparisson against the ED30....

Well it is slightly slower, not sure if that was beacuse this one only had 700 miles on it, or the fact that it is 20 bhp down. Even so its not that noticeable, and not something I'd really worry about.

Best thing for me on the mk6 is its queiter in the cabin, especially at motorway 70/80/90 speeds than the ED30, which can be a bit droney on long motorway runs which we do a lot of.

Also cabin is way way better than the mk5, that to me was a big selling point.

Worst thing for the mk6, Xennons are over a grand

So we have specced the car without them, which I'm still not sure about to be honest. I think the mk6 headlamps look ok, better than the mk5, but I just can't justify over 1k on Xennons when we also need a new kitchen!

Therefore I deffo need some H15's in white to get rid of tem cheap yellow DRL's

Really excellent and helpful post. Thanks for taking the time to write it. If only the £ / € would return to normal, then maybe we could all go to Germany and order our cars there for a quicker delivery. I just hope VW ramps-up production again.

just a wee update regarding what i finally ordered.

Candy white
18" monza
Xenons
Sunroof
RCD510 & dynaudio
Rear camera
Cruise & Service Plan

should be good for march 1st delivery or thereabouts, got a deal that i'm happy with, sounds similar to HA54SYM's deal. So just playing the waiting game. Dealer ended up being Verve Wishaw, which is a bit of distance from me, dealt with a trainee salesman and sales manager. Can't wait

From the last time i ordered a new car, they can give you a provisional build week when it gets placed on the system, however with the GTI it seems to be changing as all the dealers are struggling with allocations etc. I think the dealers check on a Tuesday every week.

Then nearer the time you get a confirmed build week, it then gets built, shipped etc.

Maybe someone on here will know a bit more about it??

I think that, under normal circumstances, you'd get a confirmed build week within the first month after your order.

If, however, normal service hasn't yet resumed then you won't and nobody will tell you anything about it until about a week before they're ready to build your car!

Would imagine that there are a fair few cancelled orders that can be reallocated to new customers.  If you have to go to the back of the queue though I think my dealer's still quoting 16 weeks.

I think that would be about right. I ordered mine at the end of oct, the 28th there or abouts. Dealer was fairly confident of getting it before the end of Feb 10. But as you say, it's not mormal times....

You normally get an unconfirmed build week allocation after about 3 weeks. This is sort of the time you can change your spec in. Then 4to5 weeks before the build week time your order gets confirmed status.
