I'm getting a lot of backwards/forwards play in my gear selector. After looking at it last night with a tiny torch, it looks like I'm missing the ball of the gear relay shaft. I'm guessing this would be an easy replacement, but I can't for the life of me find the part anywhere?
Does anyone know where I can get one?
Thanks

will be keeping an eye on this cos i need one.As a temporary cure i got the ball off a vento at the scrappie but it aint perfect.

Well I got first dibs... :smug:
How does the ball fit on to the relay shaft, does it just screw on?
-
Have a look in the MK2 maintenance seciton, there's a whole write up on how to renew the bushes and relay shaft ball etc
-
Already looked, but can't see anywhere how to change the ball?

The ball wasn't designed with the intention of it being able to be swapped out.
You can buy the whole selector arm with the ball attached from GSF - just compare the sizes first as mine was offset a little.

Mine has just been done - like yours half of the ball was missing, and as above, you need the whole arm and ball. Mine was done by a garage - not sure where he got the part from, but it was about £35 + VAT (possibly the dealers as there was no GSF nearby)

Wasn't Matt @ autohausdolby was it??

you can usually pop the ball off with a firm pull, or get a screwdriver in there to get some leverage.
if you get a new one from GSF, heres a tip for you. make sure the metal lever fits on the top of the shaft before you fit it to the car. I didnt and it wouldnt bloody fit! stupid pattern rubbish. in the end i had to swap the ball onto the old lever!
-
Jonny, any idea as a rough guide what the gap should be either side of the ball when its sat in the selector lever?
couple of mm ?
might try and ghetto it for the time being

as little as possible basically, any play will result in slop in the linkages. obv dont want it so tight it binds tho.
missinglinkz in the US sells poly balls, which reduce the play and wont ever wear. Also try not to have any play between the ball & the shaft itself, I put a missinglinkz ball on my MK2 Golf but there was still play between the inner plastic bit and the shaft, so I packed it out with tape. Much better :)

By a garage, shocking! Its a 10 minute job! You can see how I refitted mine by flipping it upside down, then drilled and tapped a hole and secured with a bolt.
I think it was about £17 from GSF, it will be listed on the 1st page of my project thread.

It's okay, I punished myself for this by doing the heater matrix myself
