I my car had let me down for the first time Sunday. Basicly bit of history it had a complete service back in june when I got her. I had her chip about 5weeks ago which was fine. But last Sunday she started fine in the morning and driving fine ... late Sunday I was driving in third gear at about 3k just touching/tickereling the throtal to keep it a 3k and she just cut out I turn the key 2times and she started and was away. My car ushaly starts first time. Then was fine driving again, then a bit later I was in third at about 3k and she died again but was still rolling with my foot on the gas and she fired up and away I went. Stopped at a mate for 30mins started her up first tim drove about 800yards and she died and won't start at all. What could this be? Could it be the chip or ecu? Have had no time to look to see if there's a spark or fuel getting in her. Any ideas or tips before I try fix her at the weekend/ thanks luke

what car?
-
Sorry would of helped its a mk2 gti 8v 1989 digi 2 fuelsystem
-
my gut feeling is perhaps a dodgy ignition switch
-
Right can that be tested and where about is that it ant the key is it? It turns over and I have the ignition lights, just don't start. I throught maybe fuel pump coils coil pack leads dizzy cap .... could be anything lol I'll have to see if there's fuel or a spark
-
So it's trying to crank over but not 'taking'?
-
CHeck the ECU plug is fully plugged in. If you swapped the chip recently yo may not have pushed it all the way home when refitting the plug.

Yhea its cracking over/turning over but not firering
-
Check that the cam belt has not slipped.
-
Would my gti have a immobilizer as standered? All I got with my car was a 2keys. Well if the cambelt sliped wouldn't the piston hit the valves? And would it start but be missing?..... well it was as if t turned the key off. Still had ignition lights. But the rev counter just droped like flat lined but the engine was still going over but was not firing or running as I was rolling and still in gear if that's any help
-
Mine does the same thing because the fuel relay is knackered.
I can be driving down the road, out of nowhere it stops, then I jab the fusebox and she fires back up again. It happens once every blue moon, so I cba replacing the relay.
-
not as std, but who knows what has been fitted since.
1st thing I'd do is check for 12v at the black wires to the coil, both with ignition on and when cranking :)
-
That just jogged my memory above my clutch pedal thes a black bock with black tape holding it up/together don't no what it was but as my car was fine I didn't fancy playing with it. If its not broken don't fix it but as she's broken its worth ago what rely did u replace and where abouts is it. Does your car still stop/cut out now you have replaced it.
-
Well when I turn the key I can hear the fuel pump prime and I can hear the injectors buzzing or something buzzing by the inlet manifold
-
buzzing by the inlet will be the isv :)
i'd be checking the coil live as above
-
Thanks for the adive someone had said that it could be a hall sender or bad earth what is a hall sender and what does it do? God I've got a lot to learn about my mk2 :embarassed:
-
its in the dizzy, tells the ecu what the engine is doing so it knows when to send the spark.
have a good look at the wiring around the engien also, i had a dodgy wire to the fuel rail which caused the car to jerk every now & again for about a mile, then cut out stone dead.
-
Thanks john your a big help
-
forgot to say, does the rev counter jiggle a bit when cranking? if so this means the ecu is recieving a signal from the hall sensor.
-
If the ecu is blown or the chip is screwed would it still jiggle
-
depends how badly blown the ecu is. most comon faiulure on the digi ecu is down to poor gearbox earth. this causes ecu to short injectors to ground, though the spark usually works ok still, anmd so rev counter still jiggles.
if ecu completly exploderised then rev counter wont jiggle, as ecu wont be telling coil to spark and so rev counter has no signal to detect
-
Right I changed the gear box and clutch about 3weeks ago but was fine till last Sunday. This list is getting bigger and bigger
-
Would a fuilty temp sensor make it cut out or not start or iam I just looking for problems I will post my finding at the weekend as I will be working on it at the weekend to fix her
-
wouldnt have thought it would cut out once warm, but it can make it a b!tch to start. if you havent replaced it for a while then its worth doing for piece of mind, should only cost about £13 from VW if its the later blue one, bit more if its the earlier white one.
