Title: Which engine to buy for Mk1?
Post by: Madone_si on 28 September 2004, 12:22
So after taking out the car engine yesterday and looking at the pistons and head - you can see the pistons via my gallery, I think I have to think about the following options:

1. Rebuild engine completely
2. Buy 1.9 8v complete engine (from TSR or C&R)
3. Haven't thought of a third option yet.... maybe a 1.8 16V lump? Is there any real difference from the 8V?

What you all think?

I've found a 2L engine from a guy on another forum (no-rice...) but 16V does sound good - does anyone know what BHP they kick out as standard?

140bhp on the standard management
get it breathing properly and the jets set up right you can see 165 - 170 on carbs.

SWEET, so Twin carbs better than injection....?
Title: Re: Which engine to buy for Mk1?
Post by: topher on 29 September 2004, 12:47
Not sure about "better" in the whole sense of the word, you can get the same power from injection engines with filter/exhaust/chip, but i can be a technophobe when it comes to engines. Carbs will be simpler to set up yourself.. no need for soldering any chips in etc, but you get the disadvantages too.
Might be a personal taste thing.. ive been playing with webers since age 11  8)

just a suggestion, i dont know how old you are madone but...

im currently doing a 16v conversion on my tintop and i was hoping to go the weber 45s route.  after checking it out ive decided against it because of

a) insurance  and  b) serious petrol consumption

whatever u decide make sure u can afford to be insured after the conversion  ;)

im hoping the 16v conversion will be enough for me for a little while,  danhocks mark 1 cab with the conversion was extremely quick.  :D

for my cab the dream is for a G60 engine, supercharged cab has a nice ring to it   8)

Sh*t Vixteris now you got me thinking of 16V and G60 engines..... BIG SMILES and my brain is thinking hard (now that doesn't happen often...!!)   :) :)

Not bothered on insurance side, I've paid up to several thousand before on previous cars (Skyliner and Porsche)

Post by: vixteris on 30 September 2004, 19:59
its a really hard decision isnt it.? my ideas change all the time and im glad i dont have to make a decision just yet on the cab.

i'm sure a G60 engine can be got within your price range.? one from a corrado would definately be best,? but your gonna have to keep an eye out as there not overly common.? ? 16v's are being broken all the time so it should be easy enough to find one of them but i think long term it may not be enough.

? if your gonna rebuild the cab you might as well do it to some extreme.? just seen a 1.8T engine for sale for ?850 here http://www.edition38.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=2969

only reason i dont want to 1.8t mine is because they seem to becoming rather common although speed, tunability definately make this engine a good choice  ;)

doing the work yourself will save a fair bit? 8)

Post by: Madone_si on 30 September 2004, 20:07
yeah I know, it's hard. I really like the sound of 16V or G60 engine, I've looked at loads of 1.8T and like you said everyone seems to be doing it. I would love to put a Porsche engine in a golf - but not for this project.
Title: Re: Which engine to buy for Mk1?
Post by: vixteris on 30 September 2004, 20:16
hmmm porsche engine  ;D   i had a chat about doing this with dizzie the other day  but thats some serious knowledge, experience, money, time required.  it would definately make the car stand out above the rest but realistically it wouldnt be an easy project at all and I could never afford to even drive it personally.

what will you be using the cab for??  shows, feature, track or a daily drive?  ;)

Weekend car really and summer time, I'm not really into the show car thing, I like to drive my cars properly not matter what the conditions.

What engines you got kicking around Rich?

its got to be 16v on webers, a real stealth racer. you can pick up 16v engine and boxes quite cheaply now and you will never be stuck or pay loads for parts ;)

Looked a little closer at that tdi engine, even the "buy it now" at ?800 is an amazing bargain, considering what you get with it ! If thats a route you want to take i'd snap it up quick , i have a feeling it wont be available for long.

the TDI looks great, I'm emailing the person. I have no idea how the hell I would complete that conversion, but I think it might be a laugh to have a go... properly mean asking lots of help from people on VWVortex....!!!!

16v engine weber carbs is the sh!t mate ;)
street sleeper 8)

also look at the straight up 9A block out of the passat or Corrado, can easily be tuned up to 170+ bhp.

just out of interest, who are you going to get to do the conversion? ???

Me and old man will do the work...(old man is the technical one, I'm the one that will do the work and pay of course) I've rebuilt a few cars in the last 11 years... just not too many golf, mainly Mini's Coopers...

ok have a few questions for you lot.

I'm looking at getting either a 1.9 8V engine or 2.0L 8V long stroke engine, not going for 16V now, what components do I need to change from my standard set-up from 1.8 GTI?

1. Oil pump?
2. Throttle body?
3. regulator?
4. Inlet manifold?

Any good links on this sort of upgrade would be helpful...? :)

Also does anyone know where I can get all new bolts, screws, washers etc for the engine?

Yeah he stills like to play around with cars, so it give him something to do. He wants to go the VR6 route for the golf... I don't (money and time side just don't really have.....)

Post by: tomrc on 14 October 2004, 10:45
Vr6 is all very well but there is nothing like the standard 1.6 engine that is in the mk1, although not quick it is better to have original in my opinion

Just brought a 1.8 16V engine with gearbox this morning for ?100 :) :) (rebuilt head as well) now got to get loom and rest of the gear.....

Title: Re: Which engine to buy for Mk1?
Post by: richandhazel on 14 October 2004, 15:19
Loom shouldn't be that different to your original one should it? Both are K-Jet, so I would have thought it was just a case of re-routing stuff :-\
Title: Re: Which engine to buy for Mk1?
Post by: Madone_si on 14 October 2004, 15:21
Not sure on the loom, need to find out more on that.

Might also buy black golf been hit in the sale section of site as well... another cab project....
