Title: UPRATED SUSPENSIONS?
Post by: sharpse74 on 26 October 2009, 18:52
Hi all, i have a mk2 16v 89', unfortunately the last owner of my car lowered it with just springs and kept the original shocks.  I am hoping to do a few track days + events with this car and was wondering which suspension kit (shock/spring or coilover set up) would be best for my car, my budget is around the 300 mark, many thanks....

£300 rules out coilovers as the ones in that kinda price bracket are rubbish. I'd be looking for a good used set of Koni top adjustables and some drop 40mm springs.

There's a trackday section on here so maybe worth reading through some of the threads in there as there's loads of knowledge from a few of us who like to carve up the UK's circuits.

I believe Weitec are/were having a sale of £370 for their coilovers, they seem to be the new coilovers to have (although i'm going cheapo now to save money on a cat c write off  )

Koni top-adjusts will be OK, but you need to consider that requirements for the road vs requirements for the track are very different.

When considering a purchase of struts or coilovers you need to consider the cost of OEM struts and springs.  Genuine OEM-spec items aren't cheap units, so you're going to need to step up to more than £300 to get better performance than the OEM kit (not just that feel better, because that's a very different kettle of fish).

On the road I found the Koni top-adjusts too short of travel, but I'm sure they would have been considerably superior to the OEM set up on a track.... but then you don't need the travel on a track that you need on the road.

I still think there's a very persuasive argument for OEM height struts on a Golf2 GTI, for a fast road car.  This argument falls to pieces for a track, because you need far more control over a narrower band of movement.  On that basis I'd argue for -40, but no more or you'll be compromising the geometry of the car.

As above, -40 would be my choice.
