Okay guys and gals.
I've had a GTi fitted with a RNS510 sat nav for 18 months now. As you may have seen, my car's gone in to hospital for 6 weeks, I've been given a courtesy car with no built in nav. I'd had to blow the dust off my old TomTom One, have to say it's been a pleasurable experience. Unlike the 510, it's responsive, doesn't take 5 mins (exaggeration) to boot up, and accepts full postcodes.
What I want to know is why did the RNS510 cost about 10 times more? I know it can do more than just nav but that's surely the main thing it'll be used for.
Saw an article in today's Sunday Times which was less than complimentary about an Audi system, which is probably the same functionality.
The price and useability discrepancies are the main things that pee me off. Vote for a bit of fun

Things I like about the RNS510 over the Tomtom ONE:
- larger touch screen
- features like autozoom, split screen, etc
- matches the rest of the dash
- permanent fixture (so no worrying about thieves)
- plays mp3s, ipod and dvds
- no faffing around with windscreen mounts and chargers (tomtom had a crap battery life)
Things I dislike about it compared to the TomTom:
- touch screen not as sensitive
- limited customisability
- permanent fixture (so visible!)
- crap address entry, so not very accurate
- position means more time spent not looking at the road
As for boot-up times, I personally found that the time taken to set up the satnav is much shorter than me having to get the tomtom out, attach the windscreen mount, plug in the charger (it almost never had any charge in it), apply it to the windscreen, turn it on and wait for it to load....

I have the Garmin software built into my Kenwood head unit. It works very well and hasn't let me down yet. I was so impressed I bought the wifee a Garmin Nuvi widescreen unit for her little runabout.....and that is just as good too

Tom Tom is fantastic for the money.
Never had any problems.

second all this. the reason its 10 times more, is the VW premium, just cos they can charge what they want.

I also like how the direction is displayed int eh highline display. Also I use the zoom knob alot to zoom in and out. Also the RNS510 has the 30gb hard drive to store all your music and also it plays DVDs. So it is more than just a San Nav system.
The price is very high.

Iv got a Tom Tom in mine, never let me down and works a treat.
-
I have a £1.99 map and roadsigns. They've never let me down
-
I have the old MFD2
Its sh1t :D
So I use maps and signs - which work brilliantly I find :D

Had TomTom on my PDA, but I've now got CoPilot 8 Live on my iPhone.
Only had it a few days, but so far, it's fantastic. MUCH better definition than TomTom.
Will be doing some long trips over the next couple of weeks, so will be able to test it in a bit more depth. But for £25 (compared to £60 for TomTom)
AND £150-odd for a hardware satnav.....
Haven't changed the HU from the RCD300  YET, but I'll probably get either a compatable iphone stereo, or something with a Hard Drive (not RNS510 though - waste of money imho)

Dano - is Copilot that good? Does it have European maps also? And one last question - what holder do you use for your iPhone? :)
-
ive got on of these, very neat and tidy

Yes mate,
There are European Maps - this pic pretty much sums up what it's like
(http://www.gpsdaily.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/copilot014.jpg)
I also like the fact that the speed limits are shown depending which speed limit zone you're in. It also tells you when you're speeding (apparently  )
The downside? At the moment, it isn't qwerty input for postcodes, which is a nuisance.
Cradle-wise, I'm just using my PDA cradle :) Cheapo off Ebay.

the rns510 also has a speed guide for the roads you are on, as well as having lane guidance :nerd: :smug:
-
lane guidance
Lane guidance? Modern driving is getting ridiculous... :undecided:

I used to wonder why some people would be poddling along the motorway and then all of a sudden get into the fast lane. Then after the Y junction would go back to a slower lane. Lane guidance

The general standards of motorway driving is appalling

seems a little more appropriate

Very true :)

I have the RNS 510 in my car, I also have TomTom on my PDA and my phone (And yes I can read a map , I find Satnav saves on arguments with wife when we she gives dodgy directions).
I personally prefer the overall package of the 510, being able to start the car and its there, no setting up, no time waiting for my PDA to talk to my GPS unit, looks good, large screen, directional arrows just in front of you, can't beat it. It is an expensive unit, but if it is in the car when you buy it then you don't see the cost as such.
The 510 has been invaluable recently altering my route due to traffic problems getting me to where I was going and saving time. I never found TomTom did that for me.
However, I have had a couple of problems with the 510; when I got the car the SD card slot would not recognise my media, the unit was swapped under warranty, and a few months ago the GPS unit died, again swapped out under warranty.
I only use my TomTom when I am abroad, or in wifeys car.

What I want to know is why did the RNS510 cost about 10 times more?
Now I'm not defending the price of the RNS-510, which is way to high, or its less-than-ideal sat-nav functionality. But it is probably 10x more expensive than a tom-tom because it's not just a sat-nav, is it. It's also a Radio and DVD player, with ipod compatability, which can integrate with bluetooth add-ons and your mdi, etc, etc and made specially to fit in the hole in your dash.
Plus, I'd guess economies of scale come into play. Tom-tom sell tens of millions of their units, whereas VW probably don't.
Personally, I use a map, some pre-planning and my brain to get places. Sat-nav is breeding a generation of people who blindly follow instructions without ever know where they are now relative to where they were or are going to.

Here's a wee story... a friend and I were visiting another friend in Stirling (about 35 miles away) one weekend when he whipped out his shiny new sat-nav xmas pressie on the journey back...
I laughed at him as he sat stony-faced and reminded him he f00kin already KNOWS the way road back and surely knows where he lives?
If i did have to buy a nav, I'd get meself a RNS510 :afro:

Or my mates wife who went to pick up their kids from school in his two week old BMW 130i. She used TomTom... why?
I don't know but it routed her down a road that crossed a ford... it was a few years ago and it had been raining heavily for days... to cut a long story short she attempted to cross the ford, the car stopped, got washed into the bank and her and the kids had to be rescued by the fire brigade (all unhurt if a liitle damp)... The car was left in the river for 24 hours and subsequently written off...
When he asked her why she had gone that way home she said "Tomtom told me to!"
He's not popular with his insurance company £29,000 for the BMW, a year earlier he aquaplaned his brand new Impreza STi into the central reservation (allegedly at 70mph) of the A1 wrting that off (another £28,000) then a few months later he received a bill for the central reservation of £38,000... so in the space of 12 months his insurance company footed a bill of £95,000... gulp!
