just bought a mk3 golf 1.4 8v as a run around and the petrol gauge doesn't work, haven't got round to looking at it yet but any ideas?
thanks Mark

Pull the wire off the sender, ground it out if the gauge moves it is the sender at fault.
-
will that be in the petrol tank under the rear seats? which wire do i need to do that with?
-
Green one IIRC.

Think there's a hatch in the boot.

Can't remember how many wires there are or how it is earthed. If there are two wires, join them together and the guage should read full. If there is only one, touvh it onto clean metal on the body and the guage should read full. If it does, as said before, the sender is stuffed. If it doesn't, then wiring would be the next thing to check.

just had a look, took the black cap off inside the boot, and theres 4 wires going to it,
red/yellow
thin brown
thicker brown
purple/black
-
anyone?

Two will be for the low fuel warning light. The sender unit is a round thing with a terminal and a wire usually on the centre remove it and touch it to earth as mentioned and switch ign on,observe guage.

There isn't one.

So thats why my low fuel warning light has never come on  what are the other two wires for? Sendor unit only needs one sometimes a second one to insure an earth, cant think what the other two are for.

any ideas where the sender unit would be on a vento?
-
Petrol tank would be a good place to start looking.
-
ha ha ! in the boot or underneath?
-
Don't know but I'd be looking for a hatch in the boot.
-
oh ok its not a case of taking the tank out then?!

As I said I don't know having never owned or done a tank unit on a Vento but surely the German designers wouldn't be that inept.

Under the rear seat, same as the Golf.

ok so i found the sender in the boot and pulled off the clip with 4 wires on, put a wire between 1 and 4 and still no movement on gauge, does this mean the gauge is f...cked?
-
Still dont know why there's 4 wires on the sender unit, but its the wire that goes to the gauge that you need to earth, if the gauge still dont move then earth the wire or terminal at the gauge end incase the wire from gauge to sender is broke if it still dont move, check that other side of guage has ign live feed, if it dont find out why (fuse stabiliser etc) although that would probably affect your temp gauge too. If feed ok and still dont move, then replace guage. Hope that helps.

Only had 2 wires on mine, a blue and a yellow.
