Title: one of those "easy" jobs
Post by: AdamB on 22 July 2003, 21:33
Ever started anything you wish you hadn't!!!
It's taken me 7 hours to put an electric window in the cabrio.
and that was just for the drivers door  :o
2 hours in, and the mechanism still wouldn't fit into the door properly, the window was stuck half way down, the runners wouldn't run, and to top it all it started to rain.
when I finally got the mechanism in to place, I found there was no relay in the kit for the electrics, quick trip to the auto-shop sorted that out, but then I found the wiring diagram was wrong! After it was all sorted, I decided I wanted the switch on the drivers door arm-rest. If any-one is in any doubt as to the build quility of a VW, try cutting a hole in the arm-rest.
Well, its all in now and looking very good, works well too which is always a bonus - the  passengers door can wait though. after all it will be one of those easy jobs - wont it
 ;)

After all you have learnt doing that door the other one will take 5 minutes!

Took me over 3 hours to fit a front single wiper the other week. All for the sake of looking 'cool'  :P

Adam, any chance you could take a quick piccy of your switch in your arm rest? I want to do the same, however I think the switches I have may be too big. I was going to have a wander round the scrappy and see if I could get any better VW-Audi switches, but I'm most intreagued to see how you have done yours.

Should be picking up a  mint genuine VW black toneau cover on Friday  8)

Rich,
I think the switches are vw-audi switches, they are the same as for the electric roof, and I think the same as an Audi electric window switch from the early 90's.
I'll get a couple of photos emailed to you soon
Adam

The switches I currently have fitted are much larger than the ones in our Audis so I shall try and pick up some. Look forward to seeing the pics.......bit of inspiration needed.

Hi Adam,
Yep picked it up today looks great. Thats definately the best thing that has happened to me today.
Unfortunately on my way to pick it up I went to pull out from a roundabout and my Audi gearbox went bang and bits landed in the road............I think its terminal, haven't dared look yet.  :'(

fitted electric windows to my cab. many years ago ,took me ages  when the door panel was removed didn,t expect to see the over engineered mechanism that greeted me compared to the 'ELECTRIC LIFE' after market kit that was to be fitted that still up to today doesn't work correctly, i.e. window labours on the way up, if you close the window with the door open the glass goes up at an angle, have checked the earths every thing seems to be ok, only light on this subject since reading this thread could be that i,ve no relay fitted instead, a direct power supply from the batterywith an inline fuse fitted...was going to remove the windows an refit the manual ones if i can find all those bolts but i may try the relay route first...oh by the way my switches are in the centre consol where the additional clocks should go may have to move those as well.......wyn

The "overengineered mechanism" was replaced with another scissor type mechanism that, apart from the drive from a motor, and not the handle, was exactly the same. I think I may have a different type of window system to yourself, which may be why I have had no problems with it (once it was in). It cost about ?130, so wasn't cheap either, I know you can get cheaper ones out there, but I didn't want to end up with something I had seen on another golf with after market windows, where a motor was driving a rubber band to the original mechanism - didn't think that would be too good.
The relay is just for the power using an ignition source to switch the main supply from the battery through to the switch.

Well I took a trip to the scrappy today. Picked up 2 sets of electric window switches out of an Audi 100 and have started fitting them. Adam I see what you mean, its no 5 minute job is it!! I potted the drivers side one in this evening.
Also pulled the front carpet out today as the car still hasn't dried out since its heater matrix leak..........the sound proofing is sodden.
Adam have you fitted some speakers in the rear passenger side panels? If so what have you fitted as I can't see the point in wiring up the rear parcel shelf ones as my car never goes out with the roof up.  8)

I've got some kenwood 6x4's in the back side panels. You're right about the parcel shelf, mine is wasted with the roof down, but sounds great when its up. I may remove the amp and wire  it up to the front ones, where it is needed. I am getting some aluminium surrounds made for the switches now- just to neaten it up a liittle I hope

My switches came out of the rear door handles of the Audi. I have used part of the door handle assy. to give the switch a bit of trim to surround it. I'll take photo's when i have done to show you what I mean.

sounds like it could look quite proffesional, Rich. I should get my ally surrounds for mine this week. The switches look fine at the moment, but thought the surrounds would add that little touch.

Adam, I just tried some Blaukpunt 6x4's in the side panels and they are too deep and hit the window mechanism.  >:(
How did you get round that or didn't you have that problem?
